Plain Bearing History II

by Gordon Jennings

I wonder where the once highly-touted "reticular" aluminum-tin bearing fits in this picture. These plain bearings were a mechanical mixture ("mechanical," meaning stirred together like an emulsion of water and oil, rather than an alloy) of aluminum and tin, both plated on a steel shell. The aluminum was for strength; the tin for conformability.

My recollection is that the reticular aluminum-tin bearing was the work of Glacier, in England. It was thought to be hot stuff 30 years ago, but has since disappeared.

Does anyone know anything about this?

Is anyone but me old enough to know anything about this?
