Nikasil Coatings

by Craig E. Wicke

Has anyone had any experience with the nikasil coating of cylinders by the companies advertising in Roadracing World? I saw some cylinders from a TD2 Yamaha that looked like they had pockmarks in it. I guess it could have been impurities in the coating. The cylinder had been honed to fit the pistons and it looked very hard.

My only experience with nikasil is in 911 Porsche engines. It didn't seem to wear even in high mileage engines or engines that had blown a head sealing ring. One foreman I worked for said that you just checked the pistons for wear and put new rings in as the cylinders didn't wear.
