This is what will become a periodic posting of the charter of the hotrod
mailing list, hotrod@dsea.com.

------------------------------------------------------------------

The mailing list hotrod@dsea.com is chartered to provide a forum for
people interested in high performance vehicles to exchange ideas and
discuss topics of current interest. This list is chartered as broadly
as possible consistent with noise supression. I believe it to be more
constructive to list unacceptable topics and behavior rather than
trying to ennumerate permissible behavior.

Unacceptable topics:

* Discussions about stock street cars.
* Discussions about magic elixirs such as Slick 50 with no technical basis.
* Ford vs Chevy vs ... bashing.
* Foreign or domestic car bashing.
* Purely Cosmetic issues concerning stock street cars. (Buyer's guide
to fuzzy dice/air fresheners, for example.)
* Usenet-style flaming of any sort.

Explicitly acceptable is any discussion regarding increasing the
performance of any vehicle. "For Sale" and other commercial messages,
tastefully done, are permitted. Please, no hype.

To subscribe to this list, send email to hotrod-request@dsea.com.
Please be sure to include a valid address, one without exclamation
marks, in your request.

To be dropped from the list, mail to hotrod-request@dsea.com.

To post to the list, send mail to hotrod@dsea.com. Please include a
meaningful subject line. Inquiries, and other administrivia should be
addressed to frank@dsea.com.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

A lot of people ask if they are missing articles or if they have been
unsubscribed from the list. There are easy answers to these questions.
Each article is assigned a sequential serial number that is contained
in the mail header X-sequence: If you see missing numbers, you know
you have missed articles.

The only two reasons anyone is ever unsubscribed from the list is
  a) if that person asks or
  b) if mail to an address bounces a lot.

Due to the way mail agents handle undeliverable mail, I get gobs of
bounced messages. That combined with the volume of the list means I
must remove an address on the first round of bouncing. If you are on
an Internet-based machine that uses SMTP, being down for even a short
time will result in bouncing. UUCP sites seem to have about a day of
cushion. Simply send a new subscription request to rejoin.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

There is an archive service, and a general file retreival service
available. If your message has a subject line that begins
"hotrod ftpmail", the message is consumed by limited, but prooven,
piece of software that can fetch files. Try "hotrod ftpmail help"
for details.

The archives I currently have consist of old articles put in a digest
format. Articles are grouped by month.

Confused.

[ Well confused, this is a problem...

Our news server has gone through SEVERAL reconfigurations over the last couple

The first year for the Z-28 Camaro was 1967. The cubic inch of the engine was
302 ci. The code for the engine was M O, it had small main journals and rod
journals 11 to 1 domed pistons and "492" casting heads like the later Z's
(thru '69) and the '70 LT1. The 302 was basically a 327 block with a 283
steel crank....4.00 bore by 3.00 stroke. It had 5.7 "pink" rods and a pretty
healthy cam. The engine was the same for '68 and '69 except for the crank and
rods which ultilized the later large journal size the engine code for the
later Z's was D Z. These engines were never produced for any other car other
than the Camaro....just like the Boss 302...Mustang only, although some will
tell you that there were a few Cougars out there with some, comments?

Mallory offers a lot of fuel pumps which a durable for street and
racing use. For your ZZ3 I would recommend the model #4110. It is a
110 gph pump that is factory pre-set at 6.5 psi at sea level. These
pumps are a geroter style pump, kinda like a lot of oil pumps, they run
at real tight clearances so you need to run a good high capacity 20
micron filter with them, like Mallory's 3140. Put the filter ahead of
the pump and you won't have any problems. I have a Mallory pump on my
'69 Camaro, its been on there for 2 years now without any problems. By
the way these pumps are about have as noisy as the Holley Red or Blue
pumps, you hardly notice that it is there. Mallory offers pumps ranging
from 40 to 500 gph for carbs and fuel-injection. Look for them at any
speed shop. Here's a little tech tip, If you have your battery in the
trunk, run a constant duty relay, like a driving light relay to run
your pump, that way you will have full battery voltage available to run
your pump, it will run faster and cooler. You only have to run a 16
guage wire to your switch, or ignition terminal to turn it on and
off. BISQWKRACR

Hello!

Your mailing address was given to me by a fellow Vettenetter, and I am not
subscribed to your mailing list, if there is one...

While I have quite successfully reverse-engineered my 1982 ECM chip into running
the timing for my modified 1982 Collectors Edition Corvette, I would like to
accumulate additional information on the specifics of the other tables in the
chip. You never know where an additional tenth in the quarter could come from
(I run 13.1 at 107).

I know that several companies offer alternative performance chips, and I have
always been curious about the source of their information. A friend of mine
(whose father teaches at GM corporate) says that I probably know more than most
people at this point. Being that this part of the Internet is a computer AND
car junkie's heaven (can your beer do this?), this is the group that would know
if anyone does.

I would also welcome discussion on model years other than 1982 Corvette. All of
it is interesting. How about it?

I would like to point out that the Z-28 did exist, as an option code, In the
1967 model year. This was the 302 solid lifter car with discs, HD rear
differential, available as four speeds and automatics.
"Z-28" was simply an option code designation, merely a check-box on a
dealer's production order sheet. These cars, obviously, are extremely rare. I
have read of various estimations as to how many 67's were equipped with
option code Z-28. General consensus has been that there were less than 80
cars built, but it seems that no one knows for sure.

For the 1968 model year, the Z-28 was introduced and promoted as a complete
options group, tied in with trim group upgrades, etc. Someone at chevrolet
realized the "catchy-ness" of the Z-28 option code, and the Z-28 badges for
the cars so equipped followed.

So the subject can be debated, as to how one would define the introduction of
the Z-28 - as an available option in 1967 that few were aware of, or as the
high-profile "Z-28" that was well known in 1968.

Hey Hotrod list:
I recently bought a couple of vegas, one '74 GT and a
'75 parts car. Someone has started a 350 SBC conversion
in the GT using the Hooker changeover kit.
The idea is to spend as little money as possible to get
the car going and sell the damn thing(s).

after buying these cars, several things are painfully obvious to me:
1. I will have to cut the tranny tunnel to get the TH350
to fit.
2. Exhaust routing is going to be a real pain in the arse,
particularly getting out of the engine compartment. Hooker
makes a header set for ~ $250 (ouch) that probably requires
wheel well modification. I will probably try some stock
manifolds first.
3. The rear suspension is really weak. I would install
subframe connectors, but there is no essense of a "rear"
section to tie into. Would say a decent 6 or 8 point cage
be sufficient? I don't want to spend the time or $$$ to
back-half the car.

My question is... has anyone out there done this conversion?
Any pointers or tricks??? Will the stock chassis/suspension
and miniscule rear end hold up to a "stock" 350 for a little
while??? I figure it will probably rotate those 13" tires
pretty well... :-)

Thanks for any help, (please cc any replies directly to me!)
jC.

                               TV Events

Now in its 4th and final year of weekly publication, TVE is a
compilation of info. gleaned from TV listings, auto mags., newspapers, tea
leaves, my favorite bartender, and the nice folks at TNN. A special thanks
to Curt Swinehart for providing me with info. on the many regional sports
networks and Tak Ariga for coverage in Canada. PLEASE confirm dates and
times with your local listings before setting your VCRs.

TVE will usually be updated no later than every Friday morning and will
be most accurate (or least inaccurate) for the following 7 days. If your
favorite event is "tba'd", please don't panic unless it's in the 7 day
window.

Thanks to EMI Communications, TVE listings are also available on the
World-Wide-Web at URL "http://www.emi.com/tve.html" where they will be
archived for an indeterminate period of time.

If you are having trouble with this list arriving at your site in
a timely fashion, please let me know via e-mail and I will also start
mailing you a copy.

Comments, suggestions, additions, extra pit passes, etc. to:
                                          stoffel@oasys.dt.navy.mil

Is it just me, or does the hotrod list seem very sporatic? I
have sent several messages that I never see back... Anyone
else having this trouble?

I will retry my last message:

Thanks for any help, (please cc any replies directly to me!)
jC.

I've built two SBC Vega's, a '71 and a '74, both wagons.
The '71 was my street-legal racecar (327, 12.70's), and the
'74 was my daily-driver made from parts left over from the '71,
a bone stock 283 2-bbl. The '74 was built for a total
cost of about $1,000 including rebuilding the engine and trans.
I worked at an autoparts store which helped.
I got the '74 wagon as part of a trade deal from the guy
who bought my then-daily-driver '58 Anglia.

> 1. I will have to cut the tranny tunnel to get the TH350

The TH350 fit without cutting the trans tunnel
on both cars. I had to beat the crap out of it with a big
sledge hammer on the '71, and it was a tight fit. I've
been told the '74+ had more room, and I think this might be right.

> 2. Exhaust routing is going to be a real pain in the arse,

I switched over from the doug thorley mounts to get the hooker
headers for the '71. The front-engine mounts left lots of room
for the headers, as opposed to the regular mounting with
the other kit. They come out underneath, a little on the low side.
I used stock-exhaust manifolds on the '74 with the thorley mounts
taken off the '71, but they didn't really fit -- I had to grind
one of the three
connecting bolt to the pipe away, which made it
prone to exhaust leaks, but it did "work" for many years.

I'd imagine if you have a welder you could make your own
front engine mounts, then get a pair of those "shorty" headers
and it would fit, or if you more ambition
buy a cheap set of headers for a camaro,
and dent, bend, and reweld them to until they fit.

> 3. The rear suspension is really weak. I would install

Yep, the stock 4cyl could break them. Mine held up for years
in the '74 with a stock 283, and very conservative driving.
When I finally sold the car to a 17yr old, he broke the rear-end
the first weekend he owned it. A V8-Monza 10bolt will bolt right in.

> section to tie into. Would say a decent 6 or 8 point cage
> sufficient? I don't want to spend the time or $$$ to

Why bother if you're going to sell it? My '71 12-second car
ripped the rear-end mountings off the unibody severals times,
and the doors didn't like to shut. An 8 point cage would help,
but it won't eliminate the problem for a hard-leaving car.
My '71 didn't use slicks and had a stock converter, so it didn't
really leave as hard as most dragcars do. Woulda run low-12's
if it did.

all 67 z's came with front disc brakes. there were 602 made. the only
way that you could get one was with the muncie 4 speed. it is believed
that there not any produced with air condition 67-69.

Back in high school a buddy and I picked up a running V8 Vega, all stock
suspension, a stock-rebuilt 283/2 bbl. engine and a powerglide (if memory
serves). That car would flat go! The stock rear held up to a few bashings and
eventually gave out. If you just _drive_ the car and don't nail it from a dead
stop you will probably get decent service out of the rear.

As the subject says. More details. I spliced the line coming off the Olds
ignition module directly to the input to the VDO tach. The tach is
getting 12 volts and when the engine is first started the tach begins to
register (runs up to 500 rpm then drops back to zero.) I suspect the
pulse width coming from the ign module isn't wide enough to be recocnized
by the VDO but haven't scoped it. Any suggestions appreciated.

To further endorse o-d transmissions. I recently put in a 200-4r in a 1970
Olds Cutlass with a highly modified smallblock putting out 426 h.p. and 400
lbs of torque on a dyno. The trans was built for me by T.C.I. and so was the
convertor. The car gets 25 miles per gallon on the freeway and i havent had
a problem yet. The only problem I had was when iI tried to run the stock
200-4r in this car with the engine. Burned up 3-4 in two days. Read the
latest Hot Rod Magazine report on this tranny. Also note the better 1st gear
ratio than the 350 not to mention the .67 over drive. Cant beat the combo.

way that you could get one was with the muncie 4 speed. it is believed
that there not any produced with air condition 67-69.

Woulda run low-12's
if it did.

OK, if there's anyone still interested in the A/C technician thing, here's the
details. A letter and a check for $20 to MACS (Mobile Air Conditioning
Service) will net you a 30 question test that you can study for at home, send
back in, and hey presto you are a certified to work on mobile A/C systems.
And purchase freon, too. I think the test mostly covers EPA regulations,
with little or no A/C topics. The address and phone number are:

MACS
PO Box 100
East Greenville, Pennsylvania 18041

215 679 2220

I sent off my check today, I'll post further details if any one is
interested...

Oh yeah, someone mentioned that there was a "buyers license" that would allow
you to purchase freon, without actually getting a technicians license. I
haven't been able to find out anything about that.

Hi, I'm new to the list and of hopes that someone out there can help me.
I have a "72" Javalin with the Pierre Cardan interior package. The car is
Plum Crazy purple. What I am looking for is the outside paint scheme for
the hood and the sides. I believe they were a white stripe the a tapered
smaller over the rear fenders. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks Rusty,

Thanks
Bob Bigelow

Has anyone played with the T-56 yet? I'd like to convert my 68 Camaro
ragtop back to a manual transmission. It's got a good sized factory-looking
hole in the floor underneath current P/G shifter, and the hole for the
p/g shifter cable looks torch-cut... so I'm guessing the car was
originally equipped with a manual trans. Hell, who cares if it was! :)
I want to bang gears AND I want overdrive! SO, I hear the T-56 is
supposed to be pretty solid, anyone know where to get a good deal on
one?

Should I get the factory style or the aftermarket style? Will
either clear the tranny tunnel without significant sheetmetal work?

How much farther back will the shifter be compared to the original
3 spd (farther back is good--I've got long legs and short arms)?

How much will be required in the way of crossmember mods? Is it just
drill new holes or am I going to have to fab a new one?

Am I going to have clearance problems with the brace/pan that the
convertible has under the front subframe?

I believe the clutch is hydraulic... mounting a master cylinder and
fabricating the linkage to the pedal doesn't look like it'll be a big
deal, but has anyone here actually tried it in an early F-body?

Can I get a mechanical speedo sending unit for the OEM chevy T56?

I have a SB 400 w/ a edelbrock performer RPM intake, edelbrock 650 carb, and
slightly larger cam. My question is what is a safe RPM to take my motor to. I
have heard it is only a low RPM motor and to keep under 4800, but Ive Also
heard to take it to 6800 safely. Any response is apreciated

Hi,

I appearantly stupid....

Isn't it true that horsepower = Torque * RPM / 5252 ?

If that's true would horsepower = torque at 5252 rpm?

If that's true - why don't the horsepower plots cross at 5252 rpm (they've benn
publishing some that have the same scale for both torque and horsepower).

Which brings up another point/problem. I did some rough calculations to show
that it takes and average high performance motor about 6000rpm to reach the
point where it can make 1hp per cubic inch. I assumed a VE of 85% and a BSFC
of .50 (also 13:1 air/fuel ratio). With a BSFC of .40 and a VE of 100% the
magical 1hp per cubic inch shows up at about 5100rpm.

On a purpose built drag motor what kind of VE are the seeing and whats the BSFC
on a typical motor. I've seen VE of 102% with tuned intakes - tuned for the
same rpm as peak torque but never more. I've also seen some circle track
motors with BSFC of .42 but never lower. What gives.

Dirk

Now in its 4th and final year of weekly publication, TVE is a
compilation of info. gleaned from TV listings, auto mags., newspapers,
tea leaves, my favorite bartender, and the nice folks at TNN. A special
thanks to Curt Swinehart for providing me with info. on the many
regional sports networks and Tak Ariga for coverage in Canada. PLEASE
confirm dates and times with your local listings before setting your
VCRs.

TVE will usually be updated no later than every Friday morning and
will be most accurate (or least inaccurate) for the following 7 days. If
your favorite event is "tba'd", please don't panic unless it's in the 7
day window.

Thanks to EMI Communications, TVE listings are also available on the

Hi all,
My club (association) made up of Cobra replica owners (Unique, for
followers of the various manufacturers), wants to host a solo 1
event this fall in the Pa. Maryland, Delaware, Northern Va. area.
Can anyone point me to a track that might be suitable. We're looking for
an enthusiast type track as opposed to one of the major (spell that
faster, more dangerous) types. Thanks in advance.
BTW, we're thinking of inviting other groups (more people, more fun
theory) so if you might like to join us let me know that too.

They don't have the same scale, but if they are in the appropriate scale (I

The torque will be about the highest when the VE is the highest. There are
factors which affect this of course. The high VE gives the most fuel per
stroke and hence most torque, but at higher rpms, the losses to friction
may change where peak torque is at, but it should be close to peak VE.

Something is bogus... they should cross at 5252 if they are on the same
numeric scale.

This is probably prety atypical, but I know at least one person who
has measured 150% VE with a highly massaged Taurus-SHO intake.

I'm planning to begin building the motor for a drag and am interested
on what your ideas are for a small block Chevy (do I go for a 383, 415,
350). Also what would be the ideal car that is for drag racing that is
easy to find -- such as an iroc?
Any tips tricks ideas are much apreciated.

electronic ignition systems.

Has anyone had a good or bad experiance with the PERTRONIX IGNITOR.
This unit seems to be to good to be true inasmuch as it does not
require a "black box" mounted on the firewall and only has two wires to
connect. So, has anybody tried one of these?

You must decide on your goals before you can make any plans.
A strip-only car? Bracket racing? How fast? What budget?

It's tough to beat the cost and availability of a 350
in a '78-81 Camaro.

My standing advice for a low-budget, fast bracket car is
putting a 350 in a '75-78 Datsun 280Z.

I had an older series holley dbl pumper on my 350 in my street rod and
was never happy with it. I dont believe most street motors require more
than a 625 cfm carb and would seriously reccommend a carter or Edlbrock
performer style carb instead of a Holley. Easier to set and maintain,
and better flow and performance. Call Edlbrock Tech support and they
will be very helpful and informative about setting up a carb for your
particular application. I have a stealth manifold and "love it" hope it
was of help. See you on the street.

Hi troops,

I'm sorry about last week. Things got completely out of control and I never
caught up. Of course this week isn't much better since it's arguably the
busiest of the year for race fans (and for TV list publishers ;-)

Anyway, be careful with this issue (my staff got into the Colorado kool-aid
again last night) and have a happy and safe weekend.

And now for the command we've all been waiting for, "ladies and gentlemen,
start your vcr's :-)"

If you are having trouble with this list arriving at your site in

mailing you a copy.

I am a drag racer myself and I have seen alot of different setups
ranging from 4 cylinders to V8s that have enough cubic inches to make
you think they made a typo when putting in the number. Here is one
setup that is pretty nice.

A friend of mine is running around 11.50 and has a 355 Chevy. It is in
a 1984 Pontiac Firebird (Originally a V6 car) with a Chrysler 8 3/4
rear with 4.56 gears. It is an all steel car, no fiberglass. The cars
are easy to find and if you look hard enough, you can find one that is
in pretty good shape. The engine is a chevy 350, bored, with forged
flat top pistons, forged rods, steel crank. He has a set of Brodix
Aluminum Heads with a Wieland intake. It has a roller cam custom
ground by the builder and even my friend doesn't know what the specs
are. Topping of the engine is a Holley 4150 series 750 CFM carb. The
engine is backed up with a Powerglide. The car is very street legal,
but it does suck alot of gas due to the gearing.

The car is run regularly at Maple Grove Raceway in Reading, PA. The
engine was built by Larry Lombardo, ex Pro Stock Driver who is now
living in Bernville, PA. Larry has a shop that he mostly builds Circle
Track engines in, but if you have the money, he will build you an
engine for anything. It all depends on how much money you want to
spend and how fast you want to go.

I think the car is really great and impressive, but I really am a big
fan of Pontiac engines. They are really a challenge to build due to
the parts are about twice as much as a chevy, but you can really get
alot out of them. Another friend has a 400 Pontiac bored
.030" over with a stock bottom end except for TRW forged flat top
pistons. He has a set of stock Pontiac RamAir III heads, with a Comp
Cams Magnum hydraulic cam with I think 525 lift with about 300
duration(If you want to double check the specs, check Summit Racing
Catalog and look at the Magnum cams for a Pontiac and it is the biggest
one listed). On top it is a Edelbrock Performer Intake with a Holley
4150 series 750 CFM carb. All was backed up with a Turbo Hydro 400
setup for all out racing. It made one pass down the track till we
pulled it since he wanted to put in into a different car. It was in a
77 Pontiac Ventura.

When he made the run, it only ran a 15.40. This was due to the car had
a stock rear with 2.41 gears on a open carrier. He made a mistake and
had the car in second gear when he left the line, smoking one tire to
half track. It finally hooked up and he crossed the finish line and
hit third. He is looking for a '68 to '73 Firebird, so if anyone does
hear of one for sale PLEASE get in contact with me. I want to see what
this engine will really run.

Hey, well thats enough from me. As you can see I love talking engines,
and I could sit here all day and write a book, but that might tick a
few people off. If you do want more or want to comment on what I said,
please contact me at SDierolf@AOL.com. I love hearing about new
setups and any info I can get on cars, suspension, engines, or new
products.

   Thanks, Steve Dierolf

the drag car depends on the size/category you will be entering. for
small block engines, a 383 makes buttloads of torque, however, nothing
beats good old fashioned cubic inches

I am interested in the Paxton supercharger for the LT-1 engine in my
new Z28 convertible with 6 speed. Anyone have experience with this
installation? How is drivability affected? Does it really feel like
400 horsepower? Is it worth the more than $4,000 quoted in some retail
shops?

The Eastwood Company has a 5" scotchbrite-type wheel that I think is
what you are looking for. They mention using it with a mandrel in a
drill, but seems like it would also work in the grinder. They do say
max RPM is 5000.

The part number is #3722

Quite a while ago I mentioned that the original rear end on
my Chevelle was making noise. Well, after 199,000 miles, the last few
thousand behind a ZZ3/TH700 combo, that 8.2" 10 bolt has given up.
My problem is "what to do now?".
I'd like a two-track rear end, "posi". Having looked at the
twenty or so designs on the market, I like the idea of a mechanical
locking differential. No plates to wear or adjust, works well for
the type of driving I want to do, etc.
I've looked at the Ford 9" setup for a Chevelle. If it does
not weigh 100 lbs more than a GM 10 bolt, it costs $2000. Not exactly
what I want. I think I want a 8.5" 10 bolt with an LockRite.
I have two general areas of questioning. Can anybody recommend
a shop that will produce these at a good cost. I realize that a
rebuilt unit will cost about $50(core) + $300(diff) + $bearings
+ $labor + $shipping. $Plenty. I'd like to stay away from the
junkyards and get something that will not weigh a ton and cost
way too much. A well setup 12 bolt costs way too much around here.\
The other question is about what applications have the rear
end I need. Late production 1964 Chevelles ( like mine ) seem to have
the Camaro/Chevelle/Nova 8.2" '64-'72 unit. Obsolete as of 1984.
No production parts ( that I can find ) and not much NOS. I have a
hunch that the '78-'81 Olds Cutlass/Chevy Malibu/Buick ??/Cadillac
Seville/Pontiac ??? with 10 bolt 8.5" ring will fit directly. Does
anybody know any better?

The car is currently on the floor ( in pieces ) at Global
West. Quick thoughts are encouraged, especially those that give me
sources here in SoCal. I hear there may be a huge rear-end place in
Long Beach -- anybody know the name?

  Hello experts

I've had tire (or something else) balance problems ever since I
bought this car. The car shakes after 50 mph, it is not quite
continuous and maybe slight deceleration brings it out best. It comes
after the transmission (not engine rpm related).

I know the wheels are not perfect, but I suspect there may be other
sources too. The car has been on an accident twice, the engine has hit
 the firewall (2-3 inches movement).

We removed the drive shaft and towed the car at 50-75 mph (those
cheap rear tires of the tow vehicle, Datsun Patrol, got a bit warm
and actually made some smoke too :[ ). Result - I don't know, maybe
there was a little less shaking, maybe not.

The drive shaft looks like this (I hope):

  rear front
 ____ ____
 ___ \ ------------------------------------ / ___
    \ |_____---------/ \------------| /
    | | | |
    | |_____ | |
 ___/ | ---------\ /------------| \___
 ____/ ^ ------------------------------------ \____
           |
           |
           |
What is this joint? There is some kind of rubber between the two
tubes, the joint looks quite solid. Can this joint slip over? Can I
disassemble it? This joint is not the joint which moves with
suspension travel, that is on the transmission output shaft.

There is about five degrees angular difference between front and rear
forks of the universal joints. Is this enough difference to wake up
the shake? Is this normal tolerance in American engineering or has
that joint slipped (there is no extraneous welding marks and the shaft
is not twisted, joint bearings are excellent)?

One last thing. The tires are BF Goodrichs (M+S Lifesaver 225/70-15).
One guy told me he have had problems balancing BFGs, also the man who
did the balancing, said there is imbalance on both the tire and the
wheel (those wheels are Buick factory five spoke steel wheels,
imported from the USA and have been on god-only-knows-what). Have you
 had problems with BFGs?

Howdy,

Good to receive the digest again...thought it had died. I need
recommendations for tuning my ZZ3 engine...When purchased it dynoed at
376hp/414ft-lbs (Edelbrock 625 cfm Performer/Holly electric fuel
pump/K&N air filter/ Moroso Blue-Max wires) and I just installed a
Hypertech coil/cap/rotor on the GM HEI and an MSD6A. Questions:

1) The Chevy performance book calls for an AC904 (heat range 5); with
the MSD6A, the MSD folks recommend dropping one heat range. The next
lower heat range is an AC906 (both are Platinum plugs)....and to change
the gap from .035 to .050". Does anyone have experience with this type
of set-up? Does it sound correct?

2) I intend to drive my car (62' Corvette) in the Pony Express 100 in
June and that requires 4,400 rpm for 50 mins and 13 secs. The event is
in Nevada and although the temperatures currently are unseasonally
cold, it could be 90-100 degrees.....I use Mobil-1 and changed from
10w-40 to 15w-50 for this event. The 62' is driven everywhere and I am
trying to choose the best lubricant to protect the engine considering
the rather severe run in June. Any thoughts or suggestions?

3) Last question, the motor is sweet (flat torque curve) but has one
"flaw" that is driving me crazy. Just after WOT runs you can smell
lubricant fumes, never any smoke from exhaust, even after long down
hill, high vacuum pulls, no smoke...just that damn smell of "flashed
lubricant"...the car burns about 1 qt @ 1,200 miles...and has the stock
PCV system (pcv/valve cover to air filter and open line other valve
cover to base of carb)..can't read any fouling on plugs, but with
unleaded fuel it is tough for me to read anything from the plugs...I
re-torqued the intake manifold (cold)....valve guides were mic'd
(perfect) and new seals installed and umbrellas also added....about
16,000 on engine..

SUGGESTIONS?????? Help me out here...Thanks!

[ Phil, you are making me jealous. I intended to drive this race
in my '64 but have not gotten it finished enough to run as I want
to run. I drive it often, but not yet at 150 mph.

WRT lube, I intend to run Mobil 1. I have not thought about
plugs yet, the MSD 6AL is working fine for me. Any chance that
you have done leakdown testing on the motor?

My ZZ3 did not come with a bolt in the fuel pump pushrod clamp.
This can leak oil. Check that it is not blowing out onto your
headers and burning. ( Thanks to a few other readers on the
list for pointing this out. )

Good luck. I may see you in the fall. --FEP ]

I'm rebuilding the engine out of my old 2000cc Capri. That's what Ford
used to call the "Pinto" motor.

There was nothing wrong with it, other than the thing had close to
200,000 very hard miles, and compression was down to where you could
turn it over with one hand on the bottom pulley - with the plugs in.

I've been going to get around to rebuilding the thing for a long time.
The parts have all been on the shelf, waiting. The receipts say 1986.
Duh. Well, that was nine free years, anyway.

This seemed like a perfect opportunity to try out the array of
do-it-yourself coatings slated for a friend's motor. It takes about
two hours to yank the 2-liter, so it's a good guinea pig.

Jay had picked up the TechLine coatings from RHS. Ceramic for aluminum,
ceramic for iron, and the moly coating. They're all water based. I
bought an airbrush, toaster oven, and thermometer. Now I'm glad I
didn't start off with someone else's motor.

First off, 120 psi shop air is a little much for an air brush. Er,
um. 35 psi seems to work well.

Second, the coatings are water based. One problem is, when you apply
them, you have to just barely fog the first coat or two on, letting it
dry *completely* between coats. Otherwise the stuff will bead up.

Third, overspray cleans up nicely with a wet paper towel. However, you
should clean the overspray as soon as the parts are dry enough to
handle. If you let them sit a few days, the coatings will dry enough
to make them very hard to get off, even though they're not baked on.

TechLine says very light sandblasting or glass beading will help. I
have been looking at the little airbrush-sized "detail" sandblaster in
the Eastwood catalog. I bet it would help the beading problem too.

So far, I've ceramic coated the tops of the pistons and moly coated the
skirts, auxiliary shaft, main and rod bearings, thrust washers, and a
handful of distributor drive gears and thrust washers that happened to
be handy. I'm getting better with the airbrush. Still to go are the
cam followers, cam bearings, and the cylinder head. I'll be ceramic
coating the valve faces, combustion chambers, and both the intake and
exhaust ports.

The toaster oven is a pain in the ass. Toaster ovens in general appear
to run full bore, with a timer to turn them off. The ceramic is
supposed to bake at 150F for half an hour, then 350F for half an hour.
It was a good thing I bought the thermometer. On, off. On, off.
Bah. Of course, I only paid $8.50 for it at a flea market, but it sure
would be nice to have one of those RV-size ovens.

The instructions call for buffing the pistons with 0000 steel wool
after they're baked. So far I haven't found any in stores. I'll try
the industrial supply places next week.

I used to use flat white Spherex Ultra-High-Temp VHT paint inside my
motors, until I got out of the habit of painting inside. This time I
wanted to paint, but couldn't find any local auto parts or speed shop
that carried it. Last time I used the VHT was 1980, and the guy who
owns that engine said everything was fine when he opened it up to
replace the oil pump a couple of years ago. I found some white
industrial epoxy that looks good. I would really rather use a brush
than mask everything to spray, but that's the breaks.

I'd like to coat the cam, but it won't fit in the toaster oven. I
might sneak it into the house some night after my wife has gone to
bed...

Will the stuff come peeling off, or just wear away? Will it work as
advertised? Who knows. But this seemed like a perfect time to give it
a whirl. It'll cost me for another gasket set in a few months, to see
what it looks like inside, but when I'll know.

[ Sounds like fun. I have always wanted to have a full sized
electric stove in the garage. This is another good reason. --FEP ]

I own a 1974 cuda with the above mentioned carb. It is a dual feed carb
with the fuel line going to the primaries and secondaries. It has the
fuel line coming in to the left side of the carb( it looks like it
could also come in from the right.) My question is do I use the
air\fuel adjustment screw on the left or the right or both to change
the mixture?(car runs rich and hesitates off the line.) Any help would

Depending on your experience in engine building, I would go with a
basic SBC 350 build-up if your inexperienced, or a 383 (400 w/ 350
crank) if your more experienced. If you've got the bucks, go with a
big-block (You can't beat them for the torque)

As for a car, that also depends on your driving skill. The shorter the
wheelbase, the more squirilly the car is going to be by mid-track. I
have a '69 Camaro with a 108in. wheel-base and I have no problem
holding on with its warmed-over 350. You could go with an early '70s
Nova if you don't want the expense of a Camaro, or a '79 Malibu if you
want a longer wheelbase without any added weight.

Good luck with whatever you get.

Please help, I'm trying to find out what are the safety requierments
for running on a dragstrip. I've called a few and no one can tell me,
they tell me as long as the car is street legal, but I also heard you
have to have a driveshaft loop etc. I have a 71 vette convertible,
with a 350 (ZZ3) with ported, cc'ed, milled heads, roller rockers,
795cfm Q-jet. I would like to run it on a test&tune day or gruge
night, but don't wana drive 1.5 hrs to find out I need a rollcage.
Does anyone know? I'd be running at Atco, Englishtown or Lebanon
Valley.

Phil

[ There are a variety of requirements, most ( for drag racing )
based on the ET you will run. I do not know the specifics, but
can give a few examples.

In general, I am a big fan of safety gear. If I was racing your
car ( or my car, which is similar ), I'd have a six point cage,
four point belts, fire extinguisher, fuel shutoff.

Here are a few guesses: The rest of you are free to add truth to
the list.

Truly stock street car ( vague, I know ):
   Wear a helmet
Drive in the 13s or slower

Modified stock
   Helmet
   Driving suit
   external master shutoff
   6 point cage
   4 point belts
   driveshaft loop
   scattersheild
   Drive 11.0 or slower

Pretty darn fast
   All of above, plus
   5 point belts
   axel retainers of some sort
   hood retainers
   8 point cage
   chute
Fixed, piped fire extinguisher, inertial switch
   auto fuel pump cutoff
   Drive 9.0 or slower

Guess that's not a whole lot of good huh? That's all I can offer...

There are more Olds part people than Mondello to buy from. Also more
helpful without the attitude. Drop me a line and I'll help you with
some connections I have( I'm a member of the So. Cal. Olds Club). Also
what type of driving or use do you intend for this motor. All of these
are important in deciding what to buy.

E-mail me at San2cci@aol.com. Hope I can help.
