Whats wrong with a cheep battery charger 3 to 5 amps. Keeps an extra batter
in garage or next to house ready for help. Its cheeper and also can help the
neghbour.

I run a salvage yard in Merrimack NH - the problem with the 700r4 is
over heating - install a good quality transmission cooler and the
reliability of the 700r4 will increase 10 fold - good luck

hello

You can try looking up an old vaccume hose diagram in a Gm book. Thats
where i'd try first. If you don't suceed try to see if it is constant
vaccume. also lookup the #plate and see if it is the original carb to
that motor.

Ya might want to try a blower cam they usually are designed to bleed
off extra compression. contact B.D.S. blower drive service. or you
could play with the timing or invest in a MSD ignition with an
adjustable timing computer a much cheaper route than water injection.
Also you did not mention if you where running flat top pistons; flat
top pistons are better than dome because they tend not to have a
detonation problem. Well Hope this helps you mark D central N.Y.

Dave, find a chemical supply house and purchase a small amount of
Tetrasodium EDTA. Use about one tablespoon split up fairly evenly
between all of the cells and pour into the battery. This will
desulphate the plates and restore your battery to like new condition.
One of those things that battery manufacturers used to tell customers,
while now they would rather sell you a new battery. My grandfather
showed me this back in the 70's and I have been using it ever since.
The only time that I buy a new battery is when mine suffers physical
damage.

[ This has been discussed to death many times in many places.
Yes, it can work. Try rec.motorcycles if you want an earful ( an
eyeful in this cae ) about what goes on. --FEP ]

Wow, Time to find a new machine shop huh. Depending on how much the
heads have been milled you may have a problem, but you've got to really
cut some material to make a big difference in compression. A good rule
of thumb is that it takes about .007 to reduce the chamber volume by
1cc. on a wedge head like the small block Chevy. So unless they went
hog wild on the mill you're probably at around 10.2 to 1 now. Remember
that all this depends on other variables such as deck height, GASKET
thickness, and valve head dish. TRW (now Federal Mogul Performance,
Sealed Power) is now starting to rate their pistons using real world
data for deck height and gasket thickness, so maybe you should check
some of these things before you worry too much. One of the easiest
things to do to reduce compression is to install a thicker head gasket,
Gasket thickness specs are available from all of the major manufactuers
like Fel-Pro, Victor, and Mr. Gasket. You can reduce compression by as
much as .5 by using the right composition gasket, something to look in
to. Now if you want to play with cam timing to reduce CYLINDER PRESSURE
I would look into a cam that has a tighter lobe seperation angle, not
intake centerline, two different things, but they have about the same
number so its easy to get confused. By tightening up the lobe
seperation angle you increase overlap, which effectively reduces
cylinder pressure at low rpm, but it also closes the intake valve
sooner so it builds pressure sooner so it increases low end torque. I
know that this sounds counter productive to your problem but it does
work. The tighter seperation does reduce vacuum so be careful with
power accessories like brakes and ac. A vacuum canister works well to
solve the problem if you even have one. I wouldn't increase the
advertised duration, although really that number doesn't have a whole
bunch of meaning. To the average person its kinda misleading. If you
use that number to compare two cams using the @.050 and the advertised
by subtracting the difference between the two you can compare cams by
agressiveness of the lobes, sort of, as long as the advertised numbers
are taken at the same point on the two cams. Remember duration
determines the rpm range of the engine, lift determines torque in that
range to some degree. So always pick duration according to what rpm you
want to run in. In your case I would look for a cam with an @.050 of
222 to 228 for both intake and exhaust for the sbc and as much lift as
you can muster with those numbers. Try to find a cam or have one ground
with a lobe seperation of 108or107 degrees. Degree in the cam and put
the intake centerline in at 108 to 110 degrees. This will delay intake
closing somewhat and bleed off a little more cylinder pressure at low
rpm and give you a little more top end performance. By the way forged
pistons are a good idea if you're gonna lean on the motor some and they
do tolerate detonation a LITTLE longer but detonation will kill the
motor in a real big hurry if it goes unattended for any length of time.
Be sure that you have enough bore clearance for the pistons before you
install them because forged pistons for a 4.00 bore require about .007
clearance when cold instead of the .0015 that most cast pistons call
for. This is because of the expansion characteristics of the denser
material you spoke of. I don't have an opinion on the heat transfer
rate of the two materials, all I know is that a hotter piston and
cylinder head make more power, up until detonation of course.

Thanks for your time. See you at the races!! BISQWKRACR Always

if you have a good running 292 - don't mess with it. replace the oil
pump and timing chain and gears - i know a few folks in Stonington
Me that run the 292 in lobster boats that get years of reliable service out
of the 292 - have the salvage yard do a compression check and
take an oil pressure reading for you - good luck

Hello
My name is mark. I read your letter about your cam choice. If I where
you I'd call competition cams in memphis tennesee. If you give them the
application and how you want it to perform they can make you a special
cam with cost savings to to you in the long run, because they have the
computer tech. If you would like their number I'll look it up for you.

Sorry no help D1LEROY.AOL.COM . Anybdy know anything about building a
go cart, kart, for their kid? My kid 11 year old boy , is driving
me to hide! I have acess to a work shop, welders, ect, pip benders
. He wants to follow a set of blue prints or someting like that to
show his shop teacher at Jordan School. Is there a kit or something
already made available that we could build that the kid could fell they
made from scratch

[ Better be a HotRod kart.... Try the Norther Hydraulics catalog for
simple kart stuff. They have plenty. For more complex karts, ones
that will do >100 mph, check out local motorcycle shops. There are
plenty of wickedly fast 250cc 2 stroke karts out there. But some of
them cost quite a bit. --FEP ]

Saw it done once... the owner concluded that it would have been
easier to sell the V6 Camaro and buy a V8 powered example with a dead
motor or something.

Agreed there... yes, you DO need to change the transmission, since
the 2.8 uses the FWD-style "metric" bolt pattern, not the standard
chevy pattern. A T350 requires a adaptor kit to install, T400 requires
floorpan mods, but a T700-4R is a bolt in. The rear from the V6 cars
is marginal behind the V6, let alone the V8. You'll also need a new
harness if you plan to keep the computer control since none of the
sensors are in the same place.

     Yes.

I am somewhat familiar with these batteries. These are the very
batteries that Ohio State University used for the Electric race car...
and won with. In fact, MANY of the other universities selected them for
their GREAT power to weight ratio. The great thing about them is that
they are a Gel battery. In other words, no battery acid to spill. We
tested them against MANY other batteries, I cant't say enough good
things about the Optima battery. Power output over extended periods of
heavy load is only one of their great attributes. The one thing I don't
know about is their shelf life.

Good Luck

My father-in-law works in the power division of the local phone company
and he says thats all the use, and gave me a brouchure;

The self discharge rate graph show a fully charged battery drops from
just under 13V to 12.5 over a 200 day period. In that time, a
conventional battery could sulphate and be junk; looks like the way I'm
gonna do.

In previous contact about my transmission problems I have been told
that the 700R4 can successfully be built to be long lasting and strong,
but cost would be $1,500.00 or more. I tow a boat and I understand that
overdrive is not to be used when towing, and while the overdrive adds
about 2 miles per gallon on the highway, most of my driving is suburban
so the overdrive isn't helpful for economy. I also understand that I
can have a heavy duty 350 trans with a shift kit installed in my G-20
van (it has a 350 TBI engine) for about $650.00. This choice sounds
better dollarwise, and not much penalty for my situation. Any
comments about this? Any thoughts.

[ The TH350 is surely cheaper. WRT suburban driving: my T700R4 is
locked in 4th at about 25mph if I drive with a light foot. It seems
to make a difference in gas mileage -- I get about 20 mpg in my
Chevelle around town. --FEP ]

This is my first posting to this list, and I am wondering if any of yu
have ever done an interior in your car before.

I need to know BASIC prices for things like GOOD carpets (molded); Seat
covers vs. seat replacements or new seat cushions, and new dye jobs. I
have a 79 camaro, canary yellow outside, and I'm trying to get it all
black on the inside. It used to be that disgusting camel color, till I
sprayed over it myself.

Any other info you all could provide would be GREATLY appreciated.

                                    LISA screen name "stickyroll"

[ I do not have exact prices on specific interior components, but
have been pleased with Classic Industries ( OPGI and Classic Camaro )
on Gothard Street in Huntington Beach, CA. It helps that they are a
few minutes away, but I bought the interior kit for my Chevelle, with
   Carpet, backing, sound deadener
   Door panels
   Arm rests
   Seat covers, seat foam, clips
   new rubber bumpers,
Headliner, package tray, trunk liner, trunk paint
various little bits, all required attachment pieces

for about $1000. Installation took a month working after work. I
gutted the interior down to the metal, sanded, primed, painted twice,
and filled it all back in. The door panels could have been punched
better, that was the only problem. --FEP ]

I dunno about today's batteries but I have a Delco automobile battery
in a Nova which I used to routinely let sit for 3-6 months at a time
and never had any trouble starting the engine afterwards.

Maybe it's the easy climate in Southern California, or maybe I was
lucky and got a really good battery, or maybe that's to be expected.

Note: the Nova is a 1970 model and doesn't have anything electronic
in it except for the radio. In other words, there aren't any loads
on the battery when the ignition is off. Even the alternator uses
a separate regulator which, unlike modern internal regulator
alternators, draws _no_ current with the ignition off.

"better" pumps to use? (read: more dependable, this is my second pump,

Speaking of this subject, I'm about to drop a 700 in my '71 Cutlass
(yes, with adaptor plate 8^). I need to get a driveshaft made from
scratch - the existing one is wrong (and bent, too). Would you happen
to know the length on your Chevelle shaft?

Also, what did you use for a rear mount - case or tailshaft mount?

What'd you do about the lockup?

Is it time for a TH700SwapFAQ? ;^>

[ Yes, it is time for a TH700 FAQ. Perhaps I can put
one in the home page I am thinking of.

My TH700 driveshaft is _shorter_ than the TH350 one.
I just eyeballed it, but I am nearly sure that the difference
is very close to three inches. I had 4Trax in Anaheim do the
work.

I used the case mount, but dream of using a tailshaft
mount like the '80s F-bodies. The one thing to be careful
here is that the bolts used in the TH700 are metric and
veeeeery similar to the ones used on a TH350. Do not put
in the wrong bolts.

My crossmember slid back; I drilled extra holes and made a
few "washer plates" to hold it all togheter.

My lockup is controlled by a internal pressure switch on 4th
gear oil. When 4th is engaged, if there is power to the
switch, it locks. The most recent HRM has a review of a kit
which is the best of most worlds. A switch like mine, plus
a vacuume switch plus an override switch. All for $109 ( I
think ).

I have the TV set to switch to 4th quickly. Driving around
town, it is good to have the autolock override switch. This
prevents being locked in 4th at 1200 RPM with the car cold.

			       TV Events

Now in its 4th and final year of weekly publication, TVE is a
compilation of info. gleaned from TV listings, auto mags., newspapers,
tea leaves, my favorite bartender, and the nice folks at TNN. A special
thanks to Curt Swinehart for providing me with info. on the many
regional sports networks and Tak Ariga for coverage in Canada. PLEASE
confirm dates and times with your local listings before setting your
VCRs.

TVE will usually be updated no later than every Friday morning and
will be most accurate (or least inaccurate) for the following 7 days. If
your favorite event is "tba'd", please don't panic unless it's in the 7
day window.

Thanks to EMI Communications, TVE listings are also available on the
World-Wide-Web at URL "http://www.emi.com/tve.html" where they will be
archived for an indeterminate period of time.

If you are having trouble with this list arriving at your site in
a timely fashion, please let me know via e-mail and I will also start
mailing you a copy.

About a year ago, my friend had his 700R4 rebuilt in his '84 Corvette
equipped with a ZZ3 engine. Almost all "Hard Parts" were broken.
The cost was about the same, over $1500. Last month he had too replace
the 3-4 clutches. He did not abouse the transmission. I say look into
a TH350 or TH400, or what's the new auto in the Camaro&Corvette?

[I'm looking at replacing the master cylinder on my fiero;
[firstly, the sharp slope of the hood on the Countach body will
[make it hard to access the fluid (barely a 1/4" clearance);
[secondly, I plan on installing twin or quad piston calipers
[with a brake upgrade, and will need the larger piston bore;
[DaveH

I found and bought a replacement m/c; it's for a 1982 corvette; it has
a larger bore and is a good three inches lower that the fiero m/c; it
bolts right up the booster and combination valve, without having to
source additional fittings.

Unlike the stock m/c, it is not a 'two stage' design (the bore is
larger in the rear half of the m/c, so fluid is forced up into the
reservoir through a 'quick take-up valve' whenever the pedal is
pressed, slowing the braking process; my theory: this design lower the
chance of brake lockup by inexperienced drivers; it's also in the
camaro/firebirds, but not in the 'vette;

Being cast iron, it also weighs about 5 times as much as the
aluminum/plastic one it replaces, but that's no problem it helps the
f/r weight bias.

Now: I may want to add an external proportioning valve in the future
because of the change in tires, weight f/r, rotor size and calipers,
etc.; I would like to mount this in the dash but this would involve
routing the rear brake lines into the passenger compartment; on a race
car this is no problem, but on a street car?

Perhaps it's as simple as checking the local law, but I am looking for
feedback from those who have been there/done that.

thanks

DaveH

Why don't you just post what you might be needing in the way of
information. Though I don't have a 31 I do have a 23 which I built
from the ground up and in the near future I hope to get started on a
40-42 Willys pickup if I can ever corner the vehicle from this old man

also. Anything I could help you with I would be only too
glad.

Curious, what part of the country you're in. A friend of mine was
recently contemplating the restoration of a mid 70's Camaro. What
deterred him from doing it was the unavailability of the plastic
interior pieces. Not only from new sources, but from used ones as well.
It seems that the plastic interior parts from those years gets very
brittle and frays apart. This is caused mostly from sun damage. He
learned later that places like Oregon and Washington state would be the
best sources for used interior parts due to their rainy climates.
Does your interior suffer from this?? My $.02

Depends a lot on just what you want to do. If the door panels are in good
shape (no deep scratches in the plastic parts), you could just respray
them in black. SEM makes a good product for this.

What shape are the seats in? Covers would be the cheapest route, but not
always the best. Check some salvage yards (never call them JUNKYARDS:))
for replacement seats. Probably run about a C note for both front buckets.

I've seen a couple places that sell 'molded' carpet, but I don't know how
good their product is.

I completly redid the interior of my S-10 (yeah it was that tan color
too) using vinyl spray. Replaced the bench with buckets from an IROC.
Had the headliner done and installed a Grant wheel. Took a lot of time to
do it (disassembled everything to paint) but the result was well worth it.

The first Z-28 was the 1967 with a 302cid engine. It was basically a
destroked 327 designed for Trans-Am racing. There were no badges to
distinguish it from and ordinary Camaro, however. I think there were
only about 602 of them made that year.

be different if it was a rare model such as a rag top. Good luck.

Well that is interesting Rusty. However since I am neither the owner
of a Cadillac nor a grandparent, or even a parent for that matter, I for one
think you have many misconceptions about overdrives. My '87 Monte Carlo SS
has 75K miles on it's 200-4R, my Buick GN has 40K on it's 200-4R and is
currently running mid-12's. Many GN owners are running low 11s and high 10s
with 200-4Rs and don't seem to share your opinion. I bet their milage is
pretty good too.

RPO Z28 got ya a 302 in 67-69. In mid-68 production run they started
putting Z/28 emblems on the car (before then, Z28 was just an RPO
code).

The first Z-28 was 302 cu. in. displacement. It was a 4.000 in. Bore
and a 3.000 in. Stroke When I built a motor like that we called them
301's Chevrolet called them 302's We used to bore 283's to 4.000 in.
and use the stock 3.000 in. stroke crank and with a 375 H.P. 327
(Duntav) Cam and 2.02 327 heads and even without a balanced motor turn
RPM's in excess of 7500 on a regular basis. The big 'FORDS' would run

with angle plugs and a compression ratio around 11 to 1 - the car
also had a 12 bolt rearend and offered 4 wheel disc brakes- very

The first year for the Z-28 Camaro was 1967. The cubic inch of the engine was
302 ci. The code for the engine was M O, it had small main journals and rod
journals 11 to 1 domed pistons and "492" casting heads like the later Z's
(thru '69) and the '70 LT1. The 302 was basically a 327 block with a 283
steel crank....4.00 bore by 3.00 stroke. It had 5.7 "pink" rods and a pretty
healthy cam. The engine was the same for '68 and '69 except for the crank and
rods which ultilized the later large journal size the engine code for the
later Z's was D Z. These engines were never produced for any other car other
than the Camaro....just like the Boss 302...Mustang only, although some will
tell you that there were a few Cougars out there with some, comments?

Mallory offers a lot of fuel pumps which a durable for street and
racing use. For your ZZ3 I would recommend the model #4110. It is a
110 gph pump that is factory pre-set at 6.5 psi at sea level. These
pumps are a geroter style pump, kinda like a lot of oil pumps, they run
at real tight clearances so you need to run a good high capacity 20
micron filter with them, like Mallory's 3140. Put the filter ahead of
the pump and you won't have any problems. I have a Mallory pump on my
'69 Camaro, its been on there for 2 years now without any problems. By
the way these pumps are about have as noisy as the Holley Red or Blue
pumps, you hardly notice that it is there. Mallory offers pumps ranging
from 40 to 500 gph for carbs and fuel-injection. Look for them at any
speed shop. Here's a little tech tip, If you have your battery in the
trunk, run a constant duty relay, like a driving light relay to run
your pump, that way you will have full battery voltage available to run
your pump, it will run faster and cooler. You only have to run a 16
guage wire to your switch, or ignition terminal to turn it on and
off. BISQWKRACR

Questions: (for ZZ3 engine)

1) Why does MSD recommend a colder plug (gap increase I understand)
when using the MSD6A?

2) Spec plug is AC904; next colder is AC906..has anybody had any
experience with the 906? (I am installing MSD6A + Hyertech
coil/cap/rotor)

Todd: My fuel pump is Holley Street pump (red) and I use Wix canister
filters before and after pump; I think they are 3031s? If you need the
number I will get it.

Thanks....Phil:::

Sharen,
The list (request address) is at gnttype-request@buick.monsanto.com.
We also have a web page at http://ni.umd.edu/gnttype/www/buick.html. Our
archives are also at ni.umd.edu. I didn't want to post this to the HR list
without being on it, so if you could pass this info along, I'd appreciate
it. I'll reply to sharkbite1@aol.com directly.
