Would appreciate experienced street rodder and weekend racer input
regarding use of the Holley 4150 750cfm with externally changeable jets
versus a Predator carburetor (with idle circuit) on a port-matched
Edlebrock Torker II manifold (Sportsman heads) feeding a 406"cu SBC (236
degree duration at .050"; .495 lift cam) on a 1750lb (wet weight) street
rod. 10" converter on TCI TH-350; 3.55 RE. Which of these two fuel metering
units provides better reliability; streetability; maintainability and
performance for the street? Engine will never see more than 6000rpm. No
interest in fuel injection. Cosmetics unimportant.

I was just re-reading (and chuckling over) "trolling for taillights" in the
first issue of PE magazine.

On another note, has anyone here ever used his propane/butane R-12
replacement? The mixture is 79% propane, 11% butane, but is that by weight or
volume? What is the easiest way to mix this and get it into the A/C system?

The A/C in my car has been sitting open (no compressor) for several years now.
I'd like to fix it before another Houston summer comes around. What can I
expect to have to replace due to damage from sitting open? I have to get a
new compressor, and I figured a dryer also. Anything else? I'd appreciate
any comments on A/C work in general.

Well, it's a tie, and it's got big flames coming up from the bottom. The

Sorta cool, if you have the opportunity to wear novelty type ties. They're

I can give you all the tips I did with my 120 Mercrusier:

   1. Electronic ignition -- I just dropped a GM HEI in mine, you could
use a aftermarket or even JdG's old Mopar Module setup.

   2. Re-jet the carb - I up'd the jets in mine 2 sizes, could
almost pull a skier. Changed the carb to a 2bbl from a
305 Chevy, now I _CAN_ pull a skier and the gas useage
barely went up. The 120 is a Chevy 153ci from the 60's.

   3. Blocked exhaust; my I/O (and my dad's -- Mercrusier with a 292
Chevy "truck 6") both got barnacle clogged once. We leave ours
in salt water all summer, don't know about you. Cleaning them out
	REALLY helped.

Any A/C system that is open will need a new dryer. While you are at it,
replace the orifice tube. It is the part that makes your A/C work by
turning the warm, high-pressure liquid into cold, low-pressure gas. It has
a fine screen and a tiny hole. If the hole is plugged, the A/C will not
work efficiently, or even at all. I gather your compressor bit the bug one?
If so any pieces of the compressor it managed to pump into the system are
probably stuck in the tube. I costs about $5.

Have you priced freon lately?

That's the Duoprop model. Never seen one, except in pictures.
Bet it was a fun beast to fix when you ran it aground. ;)

I have a feeling I'm going to end up ordering some generic ignition
from JCWhitney. Was just wondering if there were any cool options
other than stealing parts from a later model Volvo.

  Hmmmm, that's something I hadn't considered.  Cheap and dirty;
I like it. I pulled the plugs, and other than #s 3&4 running a bit
rich (gotta synchronize the carbs), they looked OK.

Hopefully I won't have to replace the dual carb/intake (think they're
Solex, but don't remember) at this point. I've skiied behind this
particular boat in the past, and it was OK. I don't think I'd try
two skiers, though.

I hadn't even checked the exhaust and manifold. This beast is on
trailer most of the time, so it probably isn't a big issue, but certainly
something to watch out for.

Thanks for the great tips. I'll be sure to report progress to the
list.

By weight. And it's ISObutane - butane is a different animal. JGD's
suggestion was to fill a standard RV-type propane bottle part way (with known
weight), then add the proper weight of isobutane.

A better solution would be to "obtain" R-406a, formerly known as GHG-12, the
less-flammable substitute which is approved as an R-12 substitute in everything
_except_ cars. (Works better than R-12, works just fine in cars, but doesn't
earn the retrofit industry all sorts of money for new equipment.)

Look at George Goble's WWW home page at http://ghg.ecn.purdue.edu/ for some
more info.

The Predator is a pile of junk, it's the last thing you'd want to
run for streetability.

Only if you are a true S&M type would you get the Predator. I tried
running one for a year and the damn thing just would not stay in tune.
Although it had incredible throttle response (up there with alcohol
injection), it would seem to flatten out at high rpms. If those are
the two choices, go with the Holley.

I also am not happy with the Torker II from experience. You would
be _much_ better off with a Performer RPM or Victor Jr.

Sounds like a nice street rod. What is your wheelbase? We have a 89"
T-bucket complete with warmed-over LS-6 454, powerglide/transbrake, 4.11
12 bolt with 34" M&Hs, two 660 race Holleys and NOS fogger. We haven't
decided yet on whether to have a Clay Smith "pissed off 'pecker'" painted
on the sides!

I put the cab back on my chassis wich the engine was already in and
running. I connected the main positve battery termal line to the large
post on the starter and put a little wire from my ignition on to the
smaller post. I then turn the key and nothing happens. I then put a
voltage tester one the large post and saw 12 volts so I put the tester
on the smaller post and turn the key all the way and the line comes up
to 12 volts. I know the starter is good and its has a good ground. I
wouold appreciate any ideas on getting the starter going.

[ It would help tremendously if you were to mention which starter
you were talking about, perhaps even the application, too.

There exist Chevy "3 post" starters. If this is what you have,
try the other small post. --FEP ]

It sounds neat & I'm interested in one (have to make up my mind which color)
I do wear novelty ties (I have the Flying Eyeball tie that Herb Martinez was

my husband & I are Hot Rod Art & represent over 30 auto-related artists
I also know a number of vendor type people who would probably be interested
in carrying your ties to a variety of events across the country which is why
I asked if they were available wholesale

I had a similar setup on my street rod before I switched to EFI. I have found
that a 780 to 850 CFM carb with vacuum secondaries works well with your
combination. My personal carb choice is the Edelbrock (Carter AFB style). It
is easy to tune and very smooth transitioning from circuit to circuit. The
secondary air valve system is very streetable. Otherwise the Holley 3310 (780
CFM) is a good choice. Try it with K&N's new Flow Control air cleaner.
Use a large diameter cable linkage cam to open the throttle plates. Your
light car with all that torque will cause much tire squealing if the throttle
plates open too fast.
Also, ACCEL has a new 300+ digital ignition that's about the size of a deck
of cards and puts out 40% more spark current than the MSD 6. Built-in rev
limit too.

The Holley 4150 series carb has an excellent reputation for reliability
and performance. The new Holley 0-4779-4 double pumper comes equipped
with an adjustable four corner idle circuit standard that offers
increased control of idle quality and main system transition plus
Holley parts are available almost anywhere. The Predator carb does
have its place, but it isn't well suited for double duty on the street
and the track. It IS very responsive but it's design doesn't allow for
good fuel control under acellerating, braking and cornering conditions.
You must make your mind up when it is installed as to what condition is
most important to you because its fuel pickup is located in the corner
of the main body which necessitates a bellcrank linkage arrangement in
some cases. Also even with the so called "idle" circuit this carb will
rarely idle below 900 rpm. Probably a bit too high for your converter
and weight of car( the lighter the car the more converter you should
run, even in a street rod over 3500 rpm with your wight of car 4500's a
good starting point, you'll never feel it). With your particular
combination, you say that you won't run it over 6000, The Holley's
airflow is more than adequate. Although not a variable venturi carb it
will offer great response especially with a little accelerator pump
shot tweaking. Your combination looks pretty good, Sportsman DartII
heads really wake up a 406, oughta be good for at least 430 horses with
9 to1 or better compression......

Have fun with it! See ya at the
races.....BISQWKRACR

DUDE!!!! the predator has "almost" always been the best choice for
reliability and streetability. it just doesnt look as fancy as a
holley. plus the price was usually a factor, predator usually costing
more,.......if the price is right, go with a pred.

opinion. Treat it that way.... I've only heard Predators called

The problem that we have run into regarding the propane/iso-butane mix
is that MACS(Major Assholes Creeps and Shitheads) have gotten the EPA
to remove iso-butane from access. Used to be that it was available here
in Flagstaff at all of the camping stores for use as a high-altitude
stove fuel. I haven't been able to find it anywhere.

I'm still looking though, I WILL use this mix rather than convert to
that new and in-efficient crap that the EPA has mandated. The Arizona
legislature is processing a bill to ignore the EPA requirement to cease
production of R-12. You can bet that I called my rep to say "go for
it, screw the EPA!!"

Today Pulled the starter off and connected the two terminals agin and
got nothing so I tried the large post and the other little post and it
started so put a wire betwqeen the two little posts and reinstalled and
it kicked right over but wouldnt stop. I did not connect the large
and small post with a wire so could connecting the two small posts
cause this?

[ Again: what is the application? For some Chevy applications, one
small post is for the solenoid, the other is for something I do not
remember, but is often unused. Yesterday you mentioned that you
connected a wire 'from my ignition' to a small post. This would
make the starter always run. Try using the start circuit. --FEP ]

I'm not totally confident about my ability to repair A/C systems, I'm pretty
sure I'll still have leaks. As I recall from PE, a GHG-12 system cannot be
topped off. It is non-azeotropic, whatever that means. I'd rather not have
to continually flush/refill my system because of leaks, so I think the
iso-butane/propane mixture is my best bet. Assuming I can get it, that is.

#1....I have a 600 cfm Edelbrock on my ZZZ 350HO (375hp/414ft/lbs) and
need advice how to tell if mixture is optimum.....K&N and Holley
electric pump...if possible a step by step "how to tune your Edelbrock"
would be appreciated...reading the plugs is hopeless with unleaded
fuel...oh yes, I have a GM HEI and am about to install a MSD6A...I
drive the car hard and want the engine to stay together and keep
delivering gobs of power..
[ I just went through this with my ZZ3 + Edelbrock + MSD6AL.
There are two important things. First, read the book that comes
with your carb. and buy BOTH the tuning kit for it and the Carter
Strip Kit. Second, have an oxygen sensor mounted in your
exhaust. Then tune for power. You MUST keep good notes and
tune on the type of day you expect to run on. A few tools
help too; get a pair of needle nose vice grips, a new #2 straight
screwdriver, and a torx driver to take the carb. top off.
I have not time today for a step-by-step. Perhaps when I get
this final class finished. --FEP ]

#2....The Chevy Performance catalog calls for hot plugs, 5 heat range,
AC904 platinum plugs....I keep getting advice to use colder plugs
(remember they are aluminum heads) why? and is there an advantage to
platinum plugs? With the MSD6A I am supposed to be able to drop down
one heat range.

#3....are positraction SOLID axle differentials as strong as non-posi?
Which will absorb more torque without "breaking"?

[ There are perhaps fifty combinatins of Chevy solid rear axle
tube and OEM or aftermarket limited slip differential. Some are
strong, some not so strong. The term "posi" is so vague as to
be useless, although it is extremly popular and long-lived.
For a bit of clarification, read the latest Dick Cepak catalog
and Carrol Smith's Engineer to Win. Each has a big section on
limited slip differentials. --FEP ]

Chevy starters, in the old days, had two small terminals as well
as the large battery terminal. I believe that they were labelled
R and S but I can't say for sure.

One of the small terminals conencts to the ignition switch and
gets 12 volts from the ignition switch when it is in the start
position. The other small terminal provides 12 volts to the
+ side of the ignition coil when the solenoid is engaged - this
effectively bypasses the ballast resistor. If you have one of
these starters then the second small terminal should be left
unconnected if youa re running an electronic ignition, or it should
go directly to the + side of the coil if you are running the
old-fashioned ignition system.

Newer starters have only one small terminal because electronic
ignitions such as the HEI do not use a ballast resistor. If you
have only one small terminal then it is the one to go to the
ignition switch's "start" terminal.

The same is true of propane/isobutane. The problem is that the molecules
are different sizes, so the small ones leak through the rubber hoses faster
than the big ones, so the mixture in the system shifts composition toward
having a higher proportion of the big molecules than originally. Supposedly
if you re-plumb everything with "modern barrier-type hoses", that will reduce
the hose-leakage rate to negligable. Then once you get all the leaky joints
taken care of you should be in good shape.

			       TV Events

Now in its 4th and final year of weekly publication, TVE is a
compilation of info. gleaned from TV listings, auto mags., newspapers,
tea leaves, my favorite bartender, and the nice folks at TNN. A special
thanks to Curt Swinehart for providing me with info. on the many
regional sports networks. PLEASE confirm dates and times with your
local listings before setting your VCRs.

TVE will usually be updated no later than every Friday morning and
will be most accurate (or least inaccurate) for the following 7 days. If
your favorite event is "tba'd", please don't panic unless it's in the 7
day window.

Thanks to EMI Communications, TVE listings are also available on the
World-Wide-Web at URL "http://www.emi.com/tve.html" where they will be
archived for an indeterminate period of time.

If you are having trouble with this list arriving at your site in
a timely fashion, please let me know via e-mail and I will also start
mailing you a copy.

[1] CBC also carries all F1 and most IndyCar races. The races are
usually broadcast on a tape-delayed basis following the local late news
at approx. 11:37PM ET on the evening following the race. I understand
that it is not uncommon for CBC to delay the broadcast as much as an
hour beyond the 11:37PM start, so please use extra caution if you plan
to tape the race. If you have access to it, and your French isn't too
rusty, you may also want to check out RDS. RDS broadcasts every F1 race
and most IndyCar races, and their F1 coverage usually also includes a 30
minute prerace show. RDS and TSN generally use the ESPN feed, while CBC
generally uses the BBC feed. The exception to these rules is the
Canadian Grand Prix. Only CBC and SRC have the rights to the Canadian
GP. Thanks to Pierre Mailhot and Tak Ariga for info. on coverage in

How would one "obtain" R-406a (from People's Welding Supply), considering
the fact that it is approved for R-12 replacement for non-auto refrigeration
applications?

Unfortunately, Monroe Air Tech wants about the same price for R-406a as
I can buy R-12 for, and they only sell it in 30 pound canisters.
They're hardly an economical source.

As best I can remember, the posts were designated for Starter Power
(big Wire)this gets connected to the motor part of the starter. Then
one of the small posts is for the ignition (to pull in the solenoid
when the key is turned which in-turn connects the big wire to the
starter motor hopefully turning over the engine).?! The other small
post was for the ballast resister bypass, this gave you 12 volts for
the points instead of 6 volts( burst of spark power to get the engine
     started)

I am currently running a 750 cfm double pumper in my '69 Corvette 350.
It has a Competition Cams 280 (230 degrees at 0.050" lift), Performer
intake, 3/4" spacer, 186 casting Chevy heads (2.02's), Rhodes lifters,
and 2" headers (I know these are a little big, but they were the only
size available for the 4" side pipe set-up. Ever since I got this
running I have not had good power until above 3500 or so. I have a 600
cfm Holley sitting at home that I cut the choke horn off in hope to be
able to run it up to 6000 rpm in this car. Does anyone think that this
carb will be able to accomplish this? The model of the 600 is 6619.
The 750 that I am presently using pulls strong to 6000 and seems to
want to keep going, but just performs poorly at low rpms. I've tried
playing with the jets, power valve, and accel. pump cams. I feel that
the 600 should give more torque. It has a 1/8" smaller bore diameter,
hence should give a higher velocity for more torque. I just hope
it 6000 rpm. Does anyone have any input?

[ I run my 600 CFM Edelbrock right up to 6000 RPM without noticable
lean-out. My application is similar to yours. --FEP ]

Why both, Frank? The Carter strip kit contains a good assortment of jets,
rods, and needle/seats. What does the Edelbrock tuning kit have in addition,
and what does it lack?

[ The kits, for some reason unknown, each contain some of the parts
required. Even if you add up both kits, there are still a few jets
and many rods that you will not have.

If you have just one kit, you cannot really tune. You can try a few
things, make a couple guesses, waste some time, etc.

It could well be that you have an application where you will get by
with one kit or the other. I did not.

Oh, and the Carter kit contains more than the Edelbrock "big" kit and
costs about a third as much. --FEP ]

This may be of some help to you in the future. If you have a
camcorder or a Polaroid camera, use it before you begin to
disassemble whatever you are working on. If I hadn't have taped me
tearing down the wiring/vacuum harness of my Regal, I never would have
gotten that mess back together right... A Polaroid works better on
smaller jobs like starters, radiators, valve covers, etc.
If you don't have a camcorder, rent one from BlockBuster or one of
 those kinds of places.
I wish I could help you out, but you didn't put down what kind of
car/engine you had!?!?!?!?

Good Luck!! Jeff / GBT

Mail, due to "possible liability problems." Seems they think the
>bottles will explode in transit, or something.

I know this is not exactly reliable info, but I remember seeing a thing
on CNN or some network news that most parts manufacturers and
re-manufacturers would not honor their warranties on eqpt. that had the
isobutane refridgerant. This was due to a mechanic who was giving a
tune-up to a iso'd a/c equipped car, and a small leak in a hose was
ignited by the Winston dangling from his lips....

[ Death by natural selection. ]

And I also read in Newsweek a few months ago that a family in Louisiana
or so were killed when the compressor failed on their iso'd a/c and the
fan forced most of the butane into the engine bay/cab and ignited on
something. If you are going to do the repairs, spend the cash on the
correct materials, or, swelter one more year and get the eco-friendly
configuration next year. It will cost you more either way, but it is
alot safer.

[ This seems very unlikly, but remotely possible. If the car was
moving, it would be impossible due to dilution. I'll stop now
but mention that I will not be using the new, expensive,
stuff. --FEP ]

What kind of magic is performed when "blueprinting" carbs? I have a set
of holley 600, single feed, vac. sec. these are being run on a 671
super charged 350 chevy. I called BDS, the only info they could supply
was their price, $210 per carb! This is more than the price of the
carbs new! What can they possibly be doing to these things?? Then
there was additional charges like $187 to paint the bodies on the pair
and another $200 to chrome the bowls. So roughly $600 to blueprint and
customize a set of carbs. And of course they want the carbs to be in
"new" condition else there is yet another charge to clean them up.

Mine are new, roughly 30 hours of use on them. I'd like to know how I
can tune these things myself, what books I can read that will
especially apply to super charging. Also how difficult is it to paint
the carb bodies?? As far as bowl chromeing goes, I know Summit gets $50
for a pair, one carb. That's already half the price I got from BDS.

Any help in this area will be greatly appreciated!

[ I always thought it would be neat to powder coat carb. parts.
Something like black granite. That's about my only thought. --FEP ]

Thanks in advance.

[I'm not totally confident about my ability to repair A/C systems, I'm pretty
[sure I'll still have leaks. As I recall from PE, a GHG-12 system cannot be
[topped off. It is non-azeotropic, whatever that means. I'd rather not have
[to continually flush/refill my system because of leaks, so I think the
[iso-butane/propane mixture is my best bet. Assuming I can get it, that is.

I emailed George Goble (ghg@ecn.purdue.edu) and found out a few things:

Bill Northam (905 434-1375) is the master distributor of R-406A in Canada;

Also try Indianapolis Refrigeration Products (1-800-497-6805 or
1-800-35-R406A);

The reason you have to evacuate and refill is that it is a *blend*, and as
the system leaks, some gases leak out more than others, and unless you can
figure out (good luck) exactly what you need to add to refill the system
while keeping the percentages proper, the only way is to start from scratch.
If the percentages go too far off, the mixture become (more?) flammable. You
can still top it off, even using R-22 for 1 to 2% (Indy will recouver the
mixed stuff) even though "you're not supposed to".

Apparently , it is currently not legal to put in cars in the US anymore: it
is now a $25,000 fine/ $10,000 reward to have it in a car in the US.. (he
wasn't sure about Canada). It was developed for 'fixed' systems -- though it
can be used refrigerated trailers, it can't be used to cool the cab.

I'll have to use something; the windows in the Countach only roll down about
3"!

On GM's - I think we can assume its a GM - solenoid on the starter...-
One of the two smaller posts is labeled "S" for "switch" or "solenoid"
or what ever you want "S" to stand for. This one should go from the
starter switch. Applying 12V to this pin will engage a starter.

The other small post (I think if has an "I" on it - "intermittant"?) is
for ignition systems with ballast resistors on the "+" post of the coil.
This post gets 12V when the starter is cranking. This 12V will bypass
the balast resistor and give your ignition a slightly higher output - but
only while cranking... I'm pretty sure this is not used on HEI cars.

BTW - the two other post - one very large - the battery cable and the other
is the bolt with which the starter itself gets juice.

Just an FYI - A long run of 4 gauge cable can drop as much as 4 volts
when trying to crank over the motor - with a 13V battery this leaves
9 V at the starter. Any screw-ups in wiring (loose connections) and you'll
have even less voltage at the starter... (done that)

[ Very much so. I could not start my hot ZZ3 with a 4ga cable.
Well, it was about 110 out. I switched to a 0ga and added a kill
switch. Now no problems at all. --FEP ]

That's because you've got the circuit wrong...

Big post --> direct to battery
"S" terminal --> You hit this with +12 when you want it to crank.
"R" terminal --> This was used on the older points ignition systems,
and it's function was to supply full +12 to the coil for cranking,
bypassing the ballast resistor. Many new solenoids don't even
	have this terminal any more.

The R terminal is connected to the "Big Post" when the "S" lead goes
hot. If you wire the R and the S together, you will get the ever-running
starter, as you found out!

Keep in mind that the ground is your engine block... if you have a
bad or weak engine-to-chassis or engine-to-battery ground you'll have
cranking problems too.

> I did not connect the large and small post with a wire so could
> connecting the two small posts cause this?

Make life easy on yourself -- get a schematic for a '76 or so Chevy
and look at the starting system if you're using a electronic ignition;
use a '70 Chevy if you're in the stone age with points. The big post is
always connected directly to the battery, unless you're using the
"hot-start-solver" circuit. (sold by M.A.D too...)

Roughly speak a 750 cfm carb should be good for up to 7500 rpm on a
350. Also a 600 should be good to 6000 rpm.

Another rought rule of thumb - for maximum power - the carb should be
run from 1/3 to 2/3 of its rated capacity (at least a 4 bbl - 2 bbl are
rated differently). That would mean on a pure race 350 - the 750 would
be the ideal carb from 2500 rpm to about 5000 rpm. Below that you may
have trouble depending on fuel bowl levels. Above that you will start
to draw slight vacuum (very slight...) and when every horsepower counts
this is not good.

The problem with larger carbs is that the air doesn't have enough
velocity when going through the venturies to pull the gas into the
motor. Typically the engine will stumble and miss-fire (or even bog).
If your just down on power in the lower rpms I would look elsewhere -
specifically you ignition curve. I suspect you have the stock curve?
You pretty much will want all the ignition mechanical advance in by
2400 rpm or so.

Play with the distributer's advance and see if you can't get better
response. As far as jet sizes go. Get a stop watch and do high gear
accelerations from one rpm range to another. The smaller carb would
have higher velocities and possibly better mixing and a more consistant
mixture - but if your not seeing miss-firing your either running very
rich or you don't have a carb problem (at least not at 3000rpm).

Now, I have a question back at you - what do you think of the 280 cam.
I have a '69 vette with a 350 and 10:1 compression - 492 heads torker
intake needs only the valve train. The transmission will be a Doug
Nash 5 -speed so assume 4.56 as a final drive (3.27 1st gear with 3.05
final drive ~= 4.56 and 2.21 1st gear). The heads have been slightly
ported (pocket ported) and have dual springs.

I'm actually thinking of the 292 cam - I have unassisted brakes and
steering so that shouldn't be the problem.

Joe Kelley asked why he lacked the bottom end punch with his Vette
small block and Holley 750. I have a 327 simular to the set up that you
have and found all kinds of new bottom end when I switched from a
Holley 780 vac. to an Edlebrock 750 cfm carb. I musta picked up 25 hp
it seemed over the Holley. I highly recommend this carb. BTW with an
automatic and 3.73 gears, I get no bog with the 750 Eldebrock that I
thought I might get with a carb this size.

>What kind of magic is performed when "blueprinting" carbs? I have a set

"blueprinting" just means bring the carb to spec. I suspect they may
also remove selected flash and polish certain passages. There are also
alternative booster venturis that can be installed (annular discharge)
and other things that supposidly give stronger booster signals.

>of holley 600, single feed, vac. sec. these are being run on a 671
>super charged 350 chevy. I called BDS, the only info they could supply
>was their price, $210 per carb! This is more than the price of the

I guess this will save you $210 - don't to business with someone that
can't tell you what your spending your money on.

>carbs new! What can they possibly be doing to these things?? Then
>there was additional charges like $187 to paint the bodies on the pair

After someone stripped the cadmium plating off the carb (careful what
solvents you choose) I painted an old carb with "Frame Epoxy" from a
spray can. It looked perfect for years (last time I saw it). I think
it was VHT's "frame Epoxy" - you have to like black though. I suspect
engine paint will also work. - beter yet use a Urathane the same color
as the car. The tough part is cleaning out the crevices between the
bores and metering plates. On the old carb I did the best I could and
let the paint flow in. From the spray can, orange peel wasn't a
problem (it was non-existant).

>and another $200 to chrome the bowls. So roughly $600 to blueprint and

Holley sells chrome bowls - about $60 a set from Jeg's or Summit see
Holley's number 34-500, 34-501, 34-502. For the single pump carbs
these include covers for the vacuum canister. For about $10 a piece
they sell fast idle cam plates, accel pump covers and for $45 you can
get every bolt chromed (part number 34-512). The kits normally come
with black bolts.

Personally I'm a little sceptical about the blueprinting. I can see
how Barry Grant charges extra for a carb that has been ported and every
component, passage, fixed jet etc has been flow tested. Unless BDS has
this kind of equipement I would look else where. BTW Barry Grant
charges about $500 for a 750 double pumper - thats including the price
of the carb. Unfortunately all his carbs have the choke horn milled
off.

The GM starter stuff is set up in the following manner:

The big terminal gets connected directly to the battery with the
"+" battery cable. That is the power for the starter. The
ground path is through the block, which should be connected to
the "-" battery cable.

The two smaller terminals relate to the solenoid. One engages the
solenoid (and thus the starter) and should be hooked up to
the *momentary contact* start terminal on the ignition switch. (that is, it
should be hot only when the key is turned to "start", and not when it's in
the "run" position.)

The other small terminal *can* be used with points ignitions to supply
a full +12 to the points while the starter is engaged. It is *not* required,
but it can help. The points are usually powered via a ballast resistor
or a resistance wire so they don't get a full +12 (which helps the points last
longer). Using the 'boost' voltage while the starter is running gives you a
hotter spark to help start the engine quicker.

Thanks for advice, but I am a novice at this and need very specific
info..You say "Carter and or Edelbrock kits" I can find the jet/seat
kits that you refer to as a "strip kit" (assuming that
Edelbrock=Carter)..but my question was HOW to tune my carb..I really am
looking for a simple way to define what the "optimum" mixture is at
different throttle settings and then how to check it...like I said,
reading plugs seems to be a thing of the past with unleaded fuels and
that seems to leave me with either guessing or some type of an exhaust
sniffer...sugestions????? I don't want an on-board system....just
something to periodically tune with...

Last point....is balancing out a carb (juggling jets/settings) easy or
is it witch craft? I take pride in tuning my engine and don't want to
launch into a carb to find that I am hopelessly lost in a series of
untested changes...I need a means of verifing the correctness of each
move..

[ A few more notes. The carb. you have from Edelbrock has a specific
tuning kit, I think its the "1406 Tuning Kit". Both Edelbrock and
Carter make more comprehensive tuning kits. The Carter kit is
much cheaper than the Edelbrock kit.

I tune with an oxygen sensor. Perhaps I should dig up the old info
and post it.

About the Whitchcraft notion. This is what I used to think, for a
long time. Then I found a perfect mathematical explanation. It goes
like this.

The ideal fuel curve is a two-dimensional function. Your task is
to fit an area under the curve with a set of vectors. The problem
is that the vectors you have ( idle mix, primary jet rod step 1,
primary jet rod step 2, and secondary jet ) may not make a spanning
space for the function you want to span. As a matter of fact
they hardly ever do. You must iteratvly change the magnitued
off the vectors ( by changing idle screw, primary jet, rod, and
secondary jet ) until you come to a best fit.

Keep in mind that the consequences ( power ) for poor fit anywhere
along the curve ( not just the magnitued of the sum of errors, but the
magnitude of each error ) are HIGHLY non-linear. Aim toward the too
much fuel side, but just by a little. Aviod discontinities (
flat spots ) -- make all transitions with the smallest possible first,
second and third derivative.

Your best-fit-meter is a oxygen sensor.

When you have a solution, it is only valid for one air pressure.
Be sure to keep the weather from changing!

Now take your 2D fit and add a temporal component due to air mass.
Use the two other vectors you have, accelerator pump shot volume and
rod position springs, plus your best-fit-meter, to fix the third
dimension.

This method works every time ( if you work fast enough ).
Keep good notes and remember the relationship of the spanning vectors
and it goes well. Use a modified Newton's method, starting with
idle, then primary jet rod step 1 -- and iterate. Do pump shot last.

Oddly enough, the carb. makers try to help you do this. The
relationship between rod/jet annular area and fuel flow is a fourth-
power natural log. Essentially nonsense for humans. The makers have
very conveniently labeled some of the vectors for you with a
"sensible" conversion. Both jet and rod part numbers (not sizes)
from Edelbrock can be translated into reasonable steps for
the vectors they represent.

Its not Whitchcraft, just math ( and that is whitchcraft for some ).

How does EFI do it? EFI stores in its ROM a LARGE number of pre-
computed vectors. A LUT algorithm pulls the suitable vector quickly.
There is an additional delta vector stored based on "wear" (
GM "block learn" ) plus a real-time vector based on oxygen sensor.
Sum the vectors and fire those injectors. Just more math.

Did that help? Probably not. --FEP ]

Thanks....

I'd like to see this... I just made a little bargraph meter for use
on the 02 sensor in my winter-rat. Getting some interesting readings,
but would like to know more.

    So far I can tell:

    1. My sensor must be old, or it's just slow.
    2. Power enrichment circuit does not work properly. Stomp gas,
meter goes way lean until carb catches up.
    3. De-accleration is very lean; about .25v

[ If I remember correctly, a clean, properly heated oxygen sensor has
response time of around a millisecond. If you can see it change, it
is "slow".

Be sure to use a digital meter, or very low current drain for your
drivers. --FEP ]

OK...I have been sucked in and will enter the cult of the "jet

chief on what I believe was a NASCAR team, his comment on my carb was
"they don't work in corners" I keep hearing about them sloshing fuel,
but mine has never even burped in 9/10 corners.....

Where can I buy an oxygen sensor? Recommended brand? Model? (hope they
are simple to use)...

Funny, but I never got a solid answer on Platinum plugs.....seems like
they either better or worse than stock plugs....oh well, no black and
whites.

Thanks..Phil:::

I wonder what the laws about refrigerant sales are in other countries?
San Diego is only about an hour's drive from Mexico...

The license you need is an ASE Refrigerant Handling license. You get a
10 page (or so) booklet to read and the test is two pages with something
like 20 multiple-choice question. I have seen the test and have not
read the book. From what I remember, I you have looked under the hood of
a car and have enough intelligence to breathe, you can pass the test.
I think it costs about $20. The license is different than the ASE A/C
test, that one is hard and requires thought. The handling license is
just a formality to keep the stuff out of K-Mart. I have no idea how
to get the "test", but most of the technical assistance people here
have ASE certifications is just about everything. If there is interest,
I could check into it.

RDS generally uses the ESPN feed, while CBC
generally uses the BBC feed. Per a post from Peter Georgeu, TSN will be
using the BBC feed exclusively this season. The exception to all of
these rules is the Canadian Grand Prix. Only CBC and SRC have the
rights to the Canadian GP. Thanks also to Pierre Mailhot and Tak Ariga
for info. on coverage in Canada.

Absolutely! I would love to see anything you can dredge up.
I've actually been considering enrolling in local HVAC courses,
to see if I could get certified that way (besides, the theory
wouldn't hurt).

Please pass anything you can find to the list.

I have decided that, in the firm conviction to further customize the
MTN-KAT, that I must convert the rear axle from a very limited leaf
spring design to a coil spring setup. I want a rear axle that will
allow for easy changing of spring rates, a Watts Link and wider tires.

I like the idea of the truck style drag arm idea. The rear has two
'ladder' assemblies that reach up to the trans tunnel at approximately
the end of the transmission tail housing. Fabricate a couple of spring
pads and weld to the frame, design and construct the 'ladders',
fabricate a mounting cup for the front 'ladder' bushing assembly ( a
urethane biscuit setup similar to the rear shock mount only larger ),
some wedge jacks, the Watts Link and assemble in the frame. I'm
simplifying the procedure just a bit, I know.

Has anyone done this or something similar?
Any other idea for a better setup or something?
For those who are curious as to the type of car I'm working on, it's my
'67 Cougar.

[ I'd guess that the three point setup mentioned in Steve Smith's
"Stock Car Chassis Technology" would be good and easy to make.
That would not work too well with the Watts link, though. What about
making a Watts link on a billet plate, for lowering and centering,
plus one of those simple commercial four link kits? Even better would
be Watts link, two trailing arms and one of those tunable stock car
buffer-bar/anti-shock-bar setups.

The factory three + panhard from the about-'70 429 TBird would
probably be a good fit also. I sold mine to a friend in MA; I think
he still has it unused.

Have fun. --FEP ]

Sorry to post here with this. Does anyone have any info on where certain
names for cars came from?? In particular I am curious about the name Vega.

Thanks

Please forgive me if this is slightly off topic but when I was at a car
show last year I saw a few tot rods and this year (now my daughter is a bit
older) I thought about putting one together myself.

The ones I saw looked like scaled down '32 roadsters powered by small
honda 2 stroke engines.

I phoned up a company in the UK who wants to charge 50 UKP for a copy of
the plans to make up the chassis. This is all very well but 50 UKP is a
bit over my buget for plans.

Does anyone know of a source for plans/parts for tot rods ?? if so please
help.

Thanks
Mel

G'day fellow Drag Racing/Automotive Enthusiast,

This year is my final year of Mechanical Engineering at the University
of Queensland. I own a 1984 Holden SS Commodore. This is one of Peter
Brock's Factory modified cars (similar to what Reeves Callaway does to
the Chevrolet ZR-1 Corvette). Being around 3100 lbs, with a 308 ci.
V8, mild cam (218 deg. @ 0.050"), Roller Rockers, Big valve heads,
Holley 650 dp., twin 2 1/4 inch system, T5 transmission and 3.08 diff,
it runs low 14's over the quarter (at the Willowbank Track near
Brisbane). I always follow the local Drag Racing scene, and am a
regular spectator/entrant at the Willowbank meetings.

The Thesis I am doing for my last year is centred around the Efficiency
of the Internal Combustion Engine in various configurations. To carry
out a detailed study of this, I am in need of some software which is
not readily available here in Brisbane (Capital City of Queensland in
Australia).

The following is a list of software which I would like to get hold of:

		Patrick Hale's "Quarter Junior"
Rick Jones' "The Dyno" marketed under the name "Controlled
			 Induction Software" of the USA
		Rick Jones "Controlled Induction 301"
		Rick Jones "Controlled Induction Junior"
"Engine Analyser" ("Pro" Version preferably) EAP
		"Cam Doctor"

And any other software regarding Engine analysis.

Also this software would be invaluable to me (and various
friends with similar interests) in regards to modifying of our cars
which we are regularly involved in.

If you are interested, I have many articles written by
Professional Engine Builders and Dyno R&D facilities in Australia about
many different Engine configurations and modification levels together
with HP and Torque readings, ET's, Brake Specific Fuel Consumption, and
many camshaft comparisons. Some of these cover: Chevy engine
build-ups/modifications and their various impacts on HP, Trq, ET
readings, etc; plus articles on the effect of stroking Chevy 350's to
383 with various part/modification configurations; articles on
Australian GM V8's (308 ci.) and stroking to 355 and 383; articles on
Ford 302 and 351 motors and Stroking to 378 ci, etc...

I also have collected many of David Vizard's Books and articles (which
are heavily involved in the technical side of modifying motors
[especially the small block Chevy]) over the years not to mention
seeing some of his lectures given in Australia.

It would be much appreciated if you could help me regarding this
Software that I need.

Could you also tell me where I should look in Internet to acquire other
related software, as I have an unquenchable appetite for more
Motor/Automobile info.

						Thanks,

Did you get the info you need? I may be able to dig out the information.
It would help to know the block casting number and the head casting number.
Although it is my understanding that almost all small block heads will bolt
on, there can be some interesting side effects.
Most importantly, the different castings have places to mount accessories.
So two different heads that will bolt on have the same volume and valve
sizes, etc.... you may not be able to mount you alternator, etc.

Someone said they were looking into a license that would allow a person to

have details about this?

Some time ago Derek Pietro started building a 400 Chevy with a set of
6" Olds rods. Last time anyone heard from him he was still grinding.

Last week I was at my favorite engine shop which was, alas, going out
of business. Actually, they were already closed down, but Kenny was
finishing up some personal stuff before they hauled off the machinery.
One of the things he was working on was a 400 Chevy for his brother's
4x4.

The interesting part was, he was using Olds rods. He'd already mocked
the engine up and had run into the severe pan rail/rod nut clearance
problems Derek reported. So Kenny put the caps in a vise, found an
appropriate-size counterbore tool, and counterbored the caps another
quarter inch or so, with just enough clearance to get a Snap-on thinwall
socket on the nut. Then he shortened the rod bolts with an abrasive
cut-off wheel. There's plenty of meat in the rod cap for the mod. If
you didn't know what an Olds rod looked like, you probably wouldn't
notice.

There'll still be some grinding, but nowhere near as much now. Kenny
said they're not hitting the cam, which was rather surprising.

Are you still out there, Derek? What's the current status of your 400
project?

usually broadcast on a tape-delayed basis following the local late news

that it is not uncommon for CBC to delay the broadcast as much as an
hour beyond the 11:37PM start, so please use extra caution if you plan
to tape the race. If you have access to it, and your French isn't too

I'm looking at replacing the master cylinder on my fiero; firstly, the
sharp slope of the hood on the Countach body will make it hard to
access the fluid (barely a 1/4" clearance); secondly, I plan on
installing twin or quad piston calipers with a brake upgrade, and will
need the larger piston bore;

Any suggestions for a remote reservoir master cylinder that will bolt
up to a GM booster? I see that Master Brakes offers one (US$139) based
on a GM part; any comments on this or the company?

I like the Tilton setup I've seen in some Cobras, but the assembly is
too long to fit.

All comments welcome.

Does anyone know a supplier for those 4" paint-stripper wheels that can
be bolted up to a Makita 4" grinder?

I bought one at a swap meet at Pleasanton, CA, and it really worked
great. Eventually it wore out, and I'd like to find a supplier to get
a few more of them from.

They have a 4" doughnut of stiff burgundy-colored scotchbrite sort of
stuff glued to a plastic disk. They zip right through paint right down
to the bare metal, and they don't seem to get the metal hot at all.

The only place I've seen them is from guys with booths at the car shows
and swap meets over at Pleasanton. I heard they had a show at
Pleasanton just last weekend, but unfortuanately I missed it.

Thanks for any leads,
Tom

P.S.: Those scotch-brite wheels work lousy at stripping powder-coated
stuff. For some reason the powder coating gets sort of sticky when you
start rubbing on it, and it shreds the wheel up into a pile of powder.

[ I think that I saw these at Home Depot a while ago. Not lately,
though.

Powder Coat is typically a thermal process. I think that by using
the wheel on power coat, you are just powder coating the wheel. --FEP ]

Now that spring is approaching, I'm finalizing on plans for the 292
I6 in my boat. I have a junkyard-fresh 292 from a '70 GMC truck that
will be taking the place of the one that's there. It ran pretty good in the
truck, it's clean inside the valve cover area, plenty of compression
(160 +/- 5psi), and good oil pressure (30 psi hot idle w/ 10w40)

I was planning on just dropping the pan off and looking over the
bottom end for any wear, and doing a mild valve job on the head. I'm
also condsidering a cam...

Comments on what size cam I should use? The motor spins at about
2500-3000 at cruise, and needs to have descent bottom end for pulling up
waterskiers. I've got another bone-stock 292 in there right now which
lasted for 6 years from the junkyard untouched.. 8^) Induction is thru a
small 2bbl (like the ones used on 60's small Chevy V8's), exhaust is not
the freest flowing thing made. Idle speed/manifold vacuume is not a big
concern, although I'd like it to idle under 1000rpm. Max RPM is
something like 4500-4800. Also planning on changing the carb to a
larger style 2bbl (like one off a 305, pretty close displacement), since
the one that's on there now is the one off the 250 I6 that came with
the boat. 8^)

Hello,

The list seems quiet so I thought I'd throw this question out.

I have a small block chevy - pretty much built to LT-1 specs except
compression is only about 10:1. I have measured everything but the
heads and if the heads are 64cc then I'm at 9.7:1. But the heads have
been milled and judging my the miscommunication with the speed shop,
they may have been milled too much. - for too much compression that
is. I told the shop that it was going on a relatively low reving truck
motor - I got dual springs instead...

In any case, even with 9.7:1 I suspect I will have a problem with pump
gas, esp. If I go with a low rpm or RV cam. I contacted Comp Cams
about their 268 cam and the person answering the tech line said he has
had personal experience with the 268 cam in a 10:1 motor and it wasn't
good - needed octane boost.

So how do I pick a cam. I know longer duration will help blead off
pressure. Should I look for longer duration at .050 lift or
advertised.

If its advertised duration I'm thinking about crane's Fireball cam -
290 advertised duration and about 216 at .050 with .454 lift at the
valve. If its duration at .050 lift then I think comp cams 278/28?
dual energy cam is the way to go.

Anothher note/question. I have seen a drawing depictin heat
concentrations in forged vs. cast pistons. It seems the forged pistons
have better heat transfer rate (thanks to denser material) and may in
fact reduce the tendancy toward detonation. Any comments?

Dirk

it sounds like your talking about either:

1) the Sunchaser Tools' wheel that Ken demonstrates at a number of swap
meets & car shows - he works under a big tent (10x20) and does demos

or

2) Trucker's Choice detailing equipment - Bob & his wife also have
detailing/grinding tools/wheels - they work out of a big truck & do
both swap meets & car shows

I have both their names & addresses at home - I'm leaving early in the
morning (Fri) for Pomona and am returning on Monday - I'll get back to
you on Tuesday with the info

My "pet" is a 1988 Chevy G-20 full size van with a 350TBI and a 700R4
trans. Problem: at 50K miles last week, the trans lost reverse, and
instead it has a loud whine there. Chevy dealer says not uncommon to
lose the trans function that way at 50K miles, and just bring in the
van and about $1500.00 and we'll install another one and get you
another 50K miles. I wish to keep the van for a long time and
replacing the trans every 50K is not appealing. Does anyone out there
have any suggested alternatives? Thanks. Bob Miller

[ This is too close to rec.autos.bash.bash.bash. But, as I've been
through the T700 history, here it is.

Get heavy duty rebuild from a reputable aftermarket place. Use
extra clutches and, if you can stand it, quicker shifts. Use a
transmission cooler, or two.

These transmissions were bad, but have gotten much better. You have
one that can be fixed.

I paid $1500 outright for one with a "you cannot blow this up with a
SBC in a year" warrentee. I tried. My rear end now makes noise, but
the tranny is fine. I run a BIG cooler and a BIG finned pan.

Expect to pay about what I paid. --FEP ]

I'm looking for an automotive battery that can be left for long periods
of time without recharging, without 'going bad' (the plates sulphate,
and it's junk - and not covered by warranty;

I've seen these at car shows, and I just came across an ad for them in
the latest Car Craft mag; here it is in point form:

Optima Batteries
5 E. Mississippi ave
Denver CO 80210
303-744-5299 fax

 heavy-duty, lasts 3 to 5 times as long as conventional batteries;
 800 CCA - great for hard-to-start vehicles;
 absorbed electrolyte - no leaks even if cracked or mounted upside down;
 vibration resistance;
true zero mainteneance; not just sealed; no corrosion on terminals or
cables;
***can sit idle for up to 2 years, then spring to life, usually without
recharging;
 made in USA

Has anyone used these, or similar products? Seems ideal for cars that
have to sit out the winter or only make it out for car shows;
Expensive, but worth the money?

[ I have seen these at Danchuk ( the 55-6-7 place, down the street ).
Looks like a good idea, and Danchuk does not carry junk. I have no
knowledge of the performance of these batteries. They are the only
bright red batteries I've seen .... --FEP ]

|
|
|
I contacted Comp Camsabout
their 268 cam and the person answering the tech line said he has
| had personal experience with the 268 cam in a 10:1 motor and it wasn't
| good - needed octane boost.
|
| So how do I pick a cam. I know longer duration will help blead off
| pressure. Should I look for longer duration at .050 lift or advertised.

What about water injection? If you are only interested in preventing
detonation, water injection should solve the problem. I have a post
from a year ago or so where someone detailed their diy water injection
system. I can repost it if anyone is interested.

Now in its 4th and final year of weekly publication, TVE is a
compilation of info. gleaned from TV listings, auto mags., newspapers,
tea leaves, my favorite bartender, and the nice folks at TNN. A special
thanks to Curt Swinehart for providing me with info. on the many
regional sports networks and Tak Ariga for coverage in Canada. PLEASE
confirm dates and times with your local listings before setting your
VCRs.

Dear Hot Rodders:

Just would like to see if there is any interest out there in 1928-1934
Fords. We have a little international club (900 members) and
newsletter (magazine "Secrets") that digs up all those "lost" secrets
created by the grey beards way back in the 30's, 40's and 50's. We are
five years old now. We also test out these secrets with modern
equipment and help our members create the very best for racing and
touring.

My files are loaded with original articles and photos on everything
from cranks to flywheels, from flatheads, OHV, SOHC and DOHC
conversions for these neat little engines.

At present I am looking for knowledge on how to use a Flathead Ford V-8
flywheel in our Model "A" or "B" engines. It is a bolt on part but the
starter bendix must be reversed (difficult?) and I've been told that a
V-8 starter would work better . . . so what'a know?

Charlie Yapp

This is the third time I've tried to send this to the list,
is the list having problems or is it being roundfiled?
