From what I understand - in the late 80's they changed the syncros - I think

paper, bronze, and composit syncros are all available. Double check - but I
think the the "WC" or "World Class" T-5's had the better syncros. It is
possible to update your trans to the 'WC" specification. Contact SVO for info.
And yes the t-5 is marginal for your application - after all GM didn't offer
them behind the 350 but they did behind the 305 - is there really that much
difference between the two motors? (stock trim).

I was looking through the most recent American Science and Surplus catalog
and found a few things that could be interesting. First, they had complete
dashboard assemblies -- speedo, tach, lights, etc all mounted -- for
short money. These are NIB from some unassembled Renault. I know I
should have the price, but I cannot remember it. About $10 I think.

Also, they had a supply of screw-style Cleco fasteners. These are
sheet metal clamps used for panel layup when building airplanes and
NASCAR bodies. Drill a hole, put in clamp, turn the screw and two
panels are held together.

You're best bet would be to check out a Street Rodder, Custom Rodder, or any
other similar magazine and look through some of the ads. Some names that come
to mind are Fatman's, Pete & Jake's....

Why not be different (?) and actually drop in a MOPAR engine! (After all, the
car is Plymouth, right?) Maybe a 340 or 440, or the "more POWER!" approach - a
426 hemi! Mopar sells these as brand-new crate motors you know. Hey, I'm a
die-hard Chevy-lover, but I hate to see so many mix-match rod setups. Just
my 2 cents, though.

Actually, the Corvette suspension works quite well.
My boss a couple years ago had a 32 plymouth put on a Corvette suspension,
which in turn would solve the problem of which powerplant to pick...

I'm not too sure that this would be an inexpensive option, it depends upon the
cost of all the machine work and the availability of cores in your area.
I think that it could be inexpensive, relative to having a steel crank made.

I picked up a 292 steel crank a few months ago thinking that it was a 289. (it
was real dirty and it was free, so I didn't look too closely)

I find that the snout will need to be shortened from 3.915" to 2.885", it is
the same diameter as a 302. The keyway will need to be cut, seein' how the
292/312 keyway is near the front and will be cut off when the snout is shortened

The rear seal area of the 292/312 crank will require an adapter. The 292/312 has
a small seal area, 2.620 x 0.667 whereas the 302 is 3.621 x 0.500, an adapter
will be very easy to make on any lathe.

The journals are as follows;
		rod diff. main diff.
302 2.1228-2.1236 0.0 2.2482-2.2490 0.0
292 2.1884-2.1888 +0.0656 2.4984-2.4988 +0.2502
I don't have the specs for a 312, sorry.

The rod journals will allow the use of wider rods, ie; pinto, due to the
292/312 width being 1.765" and the 302 are 1.687"
The thrust bearing width is 1.125", needing to be widened to 1.150" for the 302.

The 292 has heavier counter weights on the front and back, this will make
balancing easier with a good chance of not requiring heavy metal.

I don't know what a flywheel for a 292/312 looks like, but the crank flanges
have very different bolt circle diameters. The 292/312 has a 3.240" circle with
11/32" coarse boltholes. The 302 has a 3.000" circle with 11/32" fine boltholes.
Looks like it is probable that a custom flywheel would be required.

No writing on the front side, havne't taken them off yet. They are bolt
on, with knock-off spinners (spinner screws onto a giant piece in the
hub). Bolt circle is whatever a 68 Camaro has stock :) They were on
the car when I got it, know nothing about them.

Look great on some cars, but they just don't go with the cowl induction
hood and rear deck spoiler :)

Dropping a forged axle is more of a
blacksmithing operation than a welding
operation. The ends of the axle are heated
and either stretched using a press or by
hammering. I think some places still do
this to OEM axles on an exchange basis.
Speedway comes to mind, call them and ask.

For disc brakes you might try leafing
through a copy of Street Rodder and calling
all of the people that sell brake kits...
You could also make your own.

I think if you want 300+ HP, you ought to go find a 400 big block.
This was factory rated at 350HP, nice flowing high compression heads
w/ 2.0/1.625 valves, about 450lb-ft torque. That's off the showroom
floor. There was a GS 400 option to the Skylark in '67-'69, which
ran 14s stock.

 Going to the Buick big block is a minimal nose weight increase;
build one with an aluminum intake instead of iron, even more so.
I know a GSified '71 that got its 350 swapped out for a 430, TH350,
GS 3.42:1 posi powertrain combo; ride height changed not at all,
no overheat problems w/ stock 350 radiator, still hasn't blown
the tranny up. I traded the 350 pieces to some truck stop dudes
in exchange for using their place to strip and abandon a '70 Electra
455 parts car. They were running dirt track stock class and were
pleased to have the high compression 4BBL heads.

2BBL cars often came with mighty low rear end ratios (numerically).
I have a buddy whose convertible has a stock factory 2.56:1 posi.
Mine had a 4bbl, but still came w/ 2.73:1, non-posi. For good 1/4
mile times, you'd have to go for 3.23s or 3.42s (the standard GS
gears) and pay for it in cruise RPM. And you'll need a posi rear
if you want to start off well.

I say if you're going to go as far as swapping heads, why not rebuild
a (period correct, if need be) big block on the stand, and then just
do an engine swap?

Ok, here is my advice to you:

Take your 350 (do the normal engine work.. bore .030 over etc)

Buy: 492 Head castings with 2.02 intake, 1.60 exhaust, 64cc combustion
chambers, port the valve pockets, 3 angle valve job, and set compression
to 11.0:1
Use Holley 300-36 intake, Holley 750cfm carb,
1 5/8-in. Dia Headers.
MSD Distributer (38 deg total mech. adv.)
Cam: Comp Cams Magnum 292H (Advertised Duration: 292/292 at .050-in lift.
lift:244/244. Lift: .501/.501 in.

If you are using an automatic, use a high stall speed for your converter...

If youre looking for 350+ hp, and 350+ torque, this is the combination I
recommend.

Its rated for 403hp @ 6500rpm, and 392 lbs-ft @ 4000 (but is above 300
from 2250 on)

I would suggest contacting Mor-Drop in Oakland, California (I believe
that they are located on 9th Ave. but I'm not sure). They specialize
in dropping original axles; as a matter of fact, I don't think they
sell a reproduction axle. At any rate, if anyone can drop an original
     I-beam, they can...

Does anyone happen to know of a place that specializes in "dropping" I-beam

If I can get this thing dropped without too much trouble, I'll probably stick

Would I need to do more than box the frame to be able to handle the torque of
a 460? I don't think the 460 would even fit under the hood without
lengthening it and having open sides for the valve covers to poke out.

I know about Butch's Rod Shop, they sell adapted Ford style supsensions to
fit the Plymouth, but does anyone know of anyone that knows how to adapt the
stock Plymouth suspension to discs?

Thanks for any info or comments.

			       TV Events

Now in its third year of weekly publication, TVE is a compilation of
info. gleaned from TV listings, auto mags., newspapers, tea leaves, my
favorite bartender, and the nice folks at TNN. A special thanks also to
Curt Swinehart for providing me with info. on the many regional sports
networks. PLEASE confirm dates and times with your local listings
before setting your VCRs.

TVE will USUALLY be updated no later than every Friday morning and will
be most accurate (or least inaccurate) for the following 7 days. If your
favorite event is "tba'd", please don't panic unless it's in the 7 day
window.

Please note that this listing is now being submitted to the moderated
newsgroup "rec.autos.sport.info". Assuming the moderators approve, this
list will be available in the r.a.s.i group from now on. In an attempt
to get the word to as many auto racing fans as possible, I will also
continue to cross-post to the groups "rec.autos.sport" and
"rec.autos.sport.nascar" for an indefinite period of time. (This again
assumes the moderators of r.a.s.i do not object to my doing so.) IMO
the group "rec.motorcycles.racing" should get a separate post as a
cross-post with the autos groups would not appear to be appropriate.

Thanks to EMI Communications, TVE listings are available from
http://www.emi.com/tve.html where they will be archived for an
indeterminate period of time.

If you are having trouble with this list arriving at your site in
a timely fashion, please let me know via e-mail and I will also start
mailing you a copy.

[1] CBC also carries all F1 and most IndyCar races. The races are
usually broadcast on a tape-delayed basis at 11:37PM ET on the evening
following the race. I understand that it is not uncommon for CBC to
delay the broadcast as much as an hour beyond the 11:37PM start, so
please use extra caution if you plan to tape the race. If you have
access to it, and your French isn't too rusty, you may also want to
check out RDS. RDS broadcasts every F1 race and most IndyCar races, and
their F1 coverage usually also includes a 30 minute prerace show. RDS
and TSN generally use the ESPN feed, while CBC generally uses the BBC
feed. The exception to these rules is the Canadian Grand Prix. Only
CBC and SRC have the rights to the Canadian GP. Thanks to Pierre
Mailhot and Tak Ariga for info. on coverage in Canada.

-> Why not be different (?) and actually drop in a MOPAR engine! (After
-> all, the car is Plymouth, right?) Maybe a 340 or 440

A nice roller cam 360 with the Direct Connection 3x2bbl intake and the
W2 aluminum heads... backed up by one of the Mopar overdrive automatics.

Why do the same thing everyone else does? I've seen enough Taiwan
chrome and fake billet Chevy parts to last me a lifetime.

Call Mor-Drop in Oakland, CA. They are probably the last and best of
the places that can and do perform this operation (dropping your
original forged I-beam). I don't have the number, but I believe that
     they are on 9th Ave.

Dropping a forged axle is more of a
blacksmithing operation than a welding
operation. The ends of the axle are heated
and either stretched using a press or by
hammering. I think some places still do
this to OEM axles on an exchange basis.
Speedway comes to mind, call them and ask.

For disc brakes you might try leafing
through a copy of Street Rodder and calling
all of the people that sell brake kits...
You could also make your own.

Well, if the bolt circle is Chevy, then they're not OE Chrysler or Ford.
Others will have to supply any more clues. Anybody know if the older
'Vettes used bolt on spinner type wires, or true knock-offs?

I know we beat this subject to death a year or so ago; but unfortunately
I deleted most of my archives, so maybe a few old timers :-) can refresh
my memory... (I don't have ftp access, so if anyone has the whole
thread, it would be greatly appreciated!)

I just blew my wad on a really nice garage, and oh yeah, there is also
a house next to it, but that doesn't really matter. I went by and
talked to the local Sherwin Williams supplier about the epoxy floor
coating that John DeArmond used to rave about. Those guys seemed
to think that it is too late in the year (too cold) here in Va to
apply the stuff and it fully cure. I have a data sheet on the product,
but I would like to get some pointers from someone who has really
done it. The little shit is important, like how much acid did
you use to etch the concrete, drying times, how many coats, etc.

Also, any other wish lists would be appreciated; especially good
sources for lights, outlets, etc. I assume the local hardware
superstore would be sufficient...

FYI, if it helps, the garage is 28' x 32' and is 3 months old.
Truss ceiling, two large aluminum doors and one window in the back
:-(. It does not (yet) have water, phone or electricity run.

Thanks for any help,
jC.

As a previous owner of a '70 Duster 340, I'd also encourage you to
use a Mopar engine instead of a boring SBC powerplant. I also ran
a stock 318 in my car after pulling the 340 for a build,
and it was a great engine also.

I also owned a '36 Plymouth coupe that I was going to make into a
street rod, and in the spirit of being both different and better,
my plan was to power it using a built mid-engine Turbo 2.2L Chrysler!
If you take the powerplant from a front-wheel drive Daytona, you'll
notice the trans is behind the engine, so putting it in the rear
gives you a mid-engine car. With a little fiberglass, you can get
the weight down on the rod enough to give you 30-35 MPG on the highway,
and with the intercooled turbo and some performance parts from Mopar,
you should also have a pretty darn fast street rod.

I had to sell my '36 when I moved before I got to build it, but I'd
like to see one of these cars built someday.

I, too, am interested in all the little stuff for putting down
the epoxy, as I have a nice garage next to a house that doesn't
really matter either... :) :) I haven't gotten the details on
the epoxy yet, but I was going to wait until next spring anyway
(I'm up in Mass, and I know it's getting cold... :) )

Thanks!

-> FYI, if it helps, the garage is 28' x 32' and is 3 months old.
-> Truss ceiling, two large aluminum doors and one window in the back
-> :-(. It does not (yet) have water, phone or electricity run.

I put in two 110v lines on two different breakers, then alternated the
outlets, using black faceplates for one line, beige for the other. That
way, wherever I was standing, I had one of each within reach, in case I
wanted to plug in two heavy loads simultaneously. I put the outlets 4
feet apart all the way around the shop. I should have put them 2 feet
apart, or tried some of those quad boxes instead of the double boxes.
Put the outlets at 40 to 48 inches, so you don't have to crawl under
something to plug in a tool.

If you think you'll want special lines to run big welders, an air
conditioner, or whatever in the future, just run the wires and tape them
off with a convenient amount of slack. You can finish that off later.

Wire LOTS of light - the 8-foot double flourescents are about $35 each,
and the bulbs are much easier to install than the smaller 4-foot lights.
Put at least two lights over each bay and as much as possible over the
workbench and machine areas. Wire them all independently. Despite what
many people say, wire is cheap - less than $50 for my whole shop, and I
have a harness as big as my wrist going down the wall to the main light
panel. You want them independent so you can only use what you need - I
have 1-1/2 kilowatts of light, enough to cause the power company to
start thinking about declaring a new dividend when it's all fired up.

Run air lines. PVC pipe is the cheapest, then copper. Iron would be
cheaper than copper, but you have to cut and thread it to go around
corners. Run the lines even if you don't have a compressor yet, because
it'll be a bitch once the place is full of stuff. Run the lines going
downhill all the way, and run a short vertical riser for each takeoff.
That'll help keep water out of the lines.

I ran three sets of 6-conductor twisted pair while I was at it, for
phone and network connections.

My .02;
Your local hardware store will have the basics, but for a complete selection
of electrical boxes, wire, lights, and outlets contact McMaster Carr (404)
346-7000, Grainger, and other local electrical equipment suppliers for
catalogs. From the catalog you will discover many options, grades, and features.

For electricity, have an electrician install a standard "breaker box"
somewhere in your shop with more capacity than you will ever need (hard to
determine). You will have to decide what your power equipment requirments
are. I suggest a three phase 220V source and outlet for compressed air. The
reduced cost of operation will pay for the three phase setup. With some
simple instruction you can wire everything yourself from the "breaker box"
to all outlets in you shop. Inspection can be made by a qualified
electrician after your installation if you want a perfectly legal and
insurable building. Standard quality outlets along all walls and for door
openers are fine, but I suggest that you have hospital grade outlets
installed at counter top level.

For counter/cabinet installation, call local shops that do a lot of home
installations and ask about cosmetically damaged goods. What is not
acceptable in you home kitchen may be perfect (and cheap) for the garage.
Many cabinets are replaced with new ones and the older removed cabinets are
often hauled to the dump by installers. Your counter top should be set to a
height common to your tool box or other movable workbenches- this will aid
in transfering heavy items from bench to workbench.

Lights may be the most important part of your shop. Nothing beats halogen
arc lamps, but the heat and ultraviolet light may not be acceptable. I would
use a combination of fluorescent lighting and halogen track lighting. I have
yet to work in a shop with enough lighting.

I have a lot of experience constructing interior power distribution,
lighting, and other electronic and mechanical setups for scientific and
machine shop applications. I will try to answer specific questions if you wish.

I put the SW Tile Clad-II down a year ago here in MD. I think the floor and
air temp need to be above 50F and below some humidity level, but you have
the info on that if you have the spec sheet. It will cure if on the cold
side, just more slowly.

On the can are alot of instructions for the different uses of the paint.
Concrete floors was one of them, as I remember. As I remember (you should
definitely check on this):

-The floor has to have been poured no sooner than 30 days prior.

-Use TSP (tri-sodium-phosphate) or it's eco-equivalent to wash the floor (my
SW dealer had the eco-equivalent.) Follow directions on it's container.

-Acid etch the floor. Buy muriatic acid at the hardware store. use a 20:1
or 10:1 mix. I found 20:1 was pretty weak and I used 10:1. Jees, I can't
remember for sure, but the acid label should tell you which to add to which,
acid to water or water to acid (I think acid to the water). All that safety
stuff applies. Rubber boots and gloves, probaly a rain jacket too, face
shield, don't breath the fumes, etc. Actually, 20:1 ain't all that dangerous.
I used a watering can to mix in and sprinkle on the floor, trying to apply
the solution to every sqaure inch directly. The stuff reacts pretty
quickly, so the solution neutralizes before you can move it much and do any
good. I used a push broom to push int around and work it.
Rinse after the bubbles stop. Rinse the whole floor again, twice.
That should be enough. If you have a ph tester, see if the floor is close
to neutral. The rinsing is supposedly real important so I rinsed alot.

-let the floor fully dry.

-PAINTING:

-First, figure out a way to breathe. A respirator rated for Xylene,
Toulene, etc. would be idea. Otherwise, lots of cross ventilation. I
didn't do too good on this and I think a few brains cells suffered :).

-As the instructions on the can said, I mixed Part A and B and some (a cup I
think) of the Reducer (you got to buy that seperately) in a 3 gal or so
bucket, mixed ALOT, and let it sit "sweat-in" for an hour. I mixed up
enough that I thought would cover the floor. This gives you a thin coat
that will go one easy and seap into the pours and crevices of the concrete.

-Apply with a 1/4" nap paint roller, with a long handle on the roller. Of
course, don't paint yourself into a corner :). Use a brush (which you don't
mind throwing away) to do the edges. Take the roller cover off the roller
after you're done and toss it. You don't want that cover EPOXIED to the
roller, do you :). If there's any paint on the parts of the roller that you
don't want EPOXIED together, clean them up. Heck You got a gallon of that
reducer anyway :).

-I think you have to wait 8 hours to recoat with full strength mix. The
cans says how long. Just mix up some more, full strength without the
reducer, and repeat the above step - with a new roller cover.

Congrats on the garage...

Also look at the Granger catalog - lots of floor paints with different degrees
of wear resistance.

Contact the local power company - often they can do surveys of your needs and
either install the appropriate system or recommend one. Locally the power
company will install some lights - below cost!!!! This reduces the total
electric load on the area's power grid and keeps them from building a new plant
- and thus saves them money in the long run. Not only that - the install and
lights are fully warenteed. Look into it. PEPCO did an install in the office
of a friends shop for a few bucks per light (florecent).

In an attempt
to get the word to as many auto racing fans as possible, I will also
continue to cross-post to the groups "rec.autos.sport.misc", "rec.autos.
sport.nascar", "rec.autos.sport.indy", and "rec.autos.sport.f1" for an
indefinite period of time. (This again assumes the moderators of r.a.s.i
do not object to my doing so.) IMO the group "rec.motorcycles.racing"
should get a separate post as a cross-post with the autos groups would
not appear to be appropriate.

-> are. I suggest a three phase 220V source and outlet for compressed
-> air. The reduced cost of operation will pay for the three phase
-> setup.

That might depend on just where you live. AP&L's rock-bottom price to
run three phase power to my house was right at $9,000.

The clock in my 1964 Chevelle died some time in the past 30 years.
I asked around at a few swap meets and car meets about what to do.
There were several vendors that said something like "give me your clock,
$75, and a month and you will be all set". Too much money.

Instead, I took the clock out and shopped around for a quartz movement
myself. I bought the $4.95 one from Woodcraft supply ( 5/8" neck )
and a $0.95 set of hands. Out came the original clockwork, and after
a few seconds on the drill press, in went the new clockwork. It is
hard to imagine an eaiser fix. I cut the back of the original
clock so the battery in the new movement would be easy to change
without removing the clock from the dash.

This fix should be applicable to a great many GM cars from the '60s
and earlier. Give it a try.

When I put the clock back in I also added an extra ground strap to
the back of the dash. As a result, my gas guage no longer changes
its reading when I put on my high beams. Imagine that.

Every now and then the subject of reverse rotation engines comes up in
Circle Quack. Smokey Yunick usually squelches it, either with "the
oiling is all wrong and it will self-destruct" or "we tried it in 1953
and it didn't work."

On the other hand, I've been vaguely aware that some marine conversions
of passenger car engines have reverse rotation. I was looking at a
rebuilder catalog today that listed various marine engines and found the
following listed as being available in reverse rotation:

Chevy 4.3 V6
Chevy small block 262-400
Chevy big block 427, 454
Chrysler 273-360
Ford 302 and 351W
Ford 429 and 460

The parts are available from Chevrolet Marine, Chrysler Marine, Ford
Marine, Mercury Marine, OMC, Berkeley, Commander, Dearborn Marine, and
others. And one very interesting source: Holman Moody Marine. Yowza.

I don't think sprinklers in a garage are the best bet....water is not the
best quench for grease, oil, and other types of fires that one may
induce in a garage... Some areas of MD (where I used to live) won't allow
it...

just a note to double check things

Jim

since you are local, I would reccommend the local super lowes in Roanoke
they have a better price thatn the local electric houses. You may want
to watch the paper for auctions in our area....Hubble in Christiansburg
has a twice a year housecleaning and if you want tools, etc the Volvo
plant has an auction twice a year on scratch/dent/surplus stuff..

good luck, if you need a hand manual laboring let me know..

I wound up with an minor investment in a local sprint car. Part of the
deal is I get to drive it for half of the next season. Unfortunately
there's a minor problem.

To put it baldly, I'm too fat to fit.

Looks like it's going to be a hungry winter.

A friend of mine did a wild three-cornered trade and wound up with the
car, with knockoff wheels, spares, in-out box, Halibrand quick change,
Hilborn injection, headers, fuel cell... everything the car ran with
last year, except for the engine and the trailer. I have a trailer and
some extra small block Chevys. We need to come up with an appropriate
cam, lifters, and valvesprings, and we're on the track. I've heard of
racing cheap before, but this is getting ridiculous...

Only 9K? Man what a deal, APS wanted almost 20,000 to run 3 phase less than 25'.
Needless to say, we ran our machines at less than top power.
I had thought about tapping into the shop across the way and burying the cable,
we all got worried that the citynazi inspectors would find us. :(

You are correct. When living in rural New Mexico, three phase power was NOT
available unless I paid for the connection from 2.5 miles away.

Residential areas are not usually developed with nice power options, but
investige anyway (as you have) to determine where the power tap is- you can
save major $ by running the proper underground cables yourself.

I will make a mental note to plan my Hotrod Garage near a power conduit.
That might mean moving the house!

Also some areas they won't do it for zoning reasons! My neighbor has tried and
they flat refused. PEPCO in the Montgomery County Maryland area - anyone have
similar situation? So many neat tools come up in the local want adds put
require thee-phase power. I understand you can get transformer and/or convert
many of the things - but I had a chance for a free plasma arc cutter a few
years back and everyone told me don't bother the transformer alone would soak
up any savings.

Well, Mountain View Electric's rock-bottom price for my shop was
$19,000! I can buy a lot of single-phase motors and power for that
much.

What prompted my inquiry was the purchase of a lathe with a three-phase
motor. I am planning on also purchasing a mill. Let's see...

Three-phase power candidates:
   air compressor
   mill
   lathe

That's three one-horsepower electric motors. The three phase savings
are going to be very small for the hobbyist. For a full-blown machine
shop running machines all day long by a bunch of people, okay, it
makes sense. I don't believe that for the weekend/evening warrior
that the savings will be worth it if you have to pay a lot to get the
power to your shop.

Also, Mountain View electric provides free power upgrades to the
meter. Your company may do so as well.

Now I'm just looking for a good price on 200ft of 250MCM electric
cable!

A couple of years ago I found a great deal on a three
phase tool. I bought a rotary converter for about
$500 (enough to run a 2 hourse motor). In retrospect, a
static converter would have probably been just fine and
about half the cost.

I set up the phase converter so that I can plug other
tools that require 3 phase in too. As long as I don't
buy anything over 2 hp I am all set. I can only use
one tool at a time anyway...

If you shop around you can probably find a _really_
good deal on a larger, used rotary phase converter.
Then you can take your three phase power with you when
you move.

And here I thought a reverse rotation camshaft would do the job.
Couldn't any oiling problems be taken care of with an appropriately

Not that it proves anything, but the reverse rotation kits I've seen
over the years just had a cam and a new distributor gear (and maybe
fresh cam drive parts).

I've also wondered if there would be any inlet manifold tuning issues
with reversed engines.

I just spoke with TFS and Summit. Summit and TFS are currently
shipping the Chevy versions of the new head. There is a high demand
and a 30 to 45 day delivery time. Summit tech said that the Ford
version will begin shipping in November. I asked for flow numbers for
the Chevy head and was directed to TFS.

TFS said the Ford version is scheduled for *Spring* and that Summit
was very incorrect in saying November. Again - in Winter of '93 I was
asked by TFS to send a letter to them stating my level of interest in
the heads and my racing plans. This was to get put on the waiting
list (which was not a commitment on my part - just an opportunity to
get the heads if they ended up being as good as they claimed). At
that time they said the heads would be ready in the early Spring of
'93. Needless to say, the heads aren't available and I was never
contacted.

The following flow numbers were supplied by TFS. I asked if these are
the numbers we would get if we pulled them out of the box,
disassembled them and dropped them on the bench. He said "That's what
they're telling me". Take that with however much salt your diet will
allow.

He said the valve springs they sell are intended for a maximum of .520
lift and for that reason they only have flow data to .500.

All numbers at 28", 2.02/1.60 valves

.1	58	53
.2	133	112
.3	194	147
.4	236	191
.5	251	216

Intake port volume is 180 cc
Exhaust port volume is 78 cc

There's a guy in (Lakeview, Lakewood, ?) Florida that runs a '65
Corvair with a reverse rotation Buick V6 (normally aspirated, carb) in
place of the flat 6. Did the work himself, and as far as I know only
had a special cam ground and an adapter plate for the trans. No mods
to the crank. I guess the starter and a few other incidental pieces
would have needed modification.

Don't know now long it will all last (or if it's already broken) though.

{ I hope that this post makes it out to the world; I've been receiving
a lot of hotrod list posts which have a length of 0 ]

A question for those of you with Holley experience: is there a way
to correct the problem of the secondary float needle leaking? I've
been experiencing a problem where the carb works OK for a few weeks
and then starts to flood the secondary fuel bowl because the needle
valve starts to leak. I take the valve out, clean it with solvent,
reinstall, and the problem is gone for a few weeks. Then it's
the same story all over again. Replacing, as opposed to cleaning,
the needle valve gives identical results.

I'm running an in-line filter before the carb, and the primary side
needle valve never develops a leakage problem. When I inspect the
leaking secondary needle valve I never see any contamination on it
but maybe the problem falls off when I pull the valve out.

Has anybody solved this problem? Thanks.

Yeah, Bob. But you live all out in hellangone, and I still haven't got
under the Bel Air to put the exhaust pipe back up. Now I know why you
have the Station Wagon From Hell and a four wheel drive.

Practically, you're looking at a phase convertor or a single phase
motor. Phase convertors vary widely in price and capacity; when I was
looking for one I kept getting prices in the $500 range, though I've
since seen them for less. Of course. For my milling machine, which
came with an Allis Chalmers three phase 1.5hp motor only slightly
smaller than a 55 gallon drum; custom housing, of course, I had to
fabricate new bracketry to hold a NEMA-standard 2hp single phase, 220v
motor. It was a fairly good deal, actually. The mill had big switch
boxes on the sides, full of relays and doodads to start or reverse the
motor. I stripped all the electrics (a BIG pile of junk!) and replaced
it all with a single switch and a wire to the motor.

When I was wiring I put in four separately wired, independently fused
220v circuits, mainly for the welder. The mill runs 220, and when I get
around to it I'll change the lathe and radial arm saw to 220. The
manuals for the lathe and saw claim more power and less power
consumption when you switch the internal jumpers for 220.

Theoretically you want the rod drillings to come out near a low
pressure area; in practice you're limited to somewhere on the top of the
rod journal, which definitely is NOT a low pressure area. I don't see
how it would matter a whole lot to a small block Ford, since I've been
doing some Ford cranks lately. I haven't looked at a Chevy crank in
quite a while.

You need the distributor drive gear to turn the oil pump in the right
direction. It would be embarrassing otherwise.

In my hotrod '54 Chevy truck, I've got a pumped up 350. Right now I
have a baffled breather on both valve covers. The truck is smog exempt
because it's so old. Since I'll only be putting a few hundred miles a
year on the truck, I don't feel to bad about not having a PCV valve
(spewing out crankcase fumes), but I wonder if it's worth hooking up a
PCV valve just to keep the oily fumes out of the engine compartment.
Is a PCV valve setup any better than just open ventillation? -- does
it do anything good besides suck up the fumes?

If I do hook one up, I think it be like this: Have an open breather
(maybe one of those K&N element type breathers) on the driver's side
valve cover. On the passenger side valve cover I would put a closed
type breather with a hose barb which would be hosed to an in-line PCV
valve and then up to the carburetor. This would be the opposite (left
to right instead of right to left) of the way most Chevys are set up.
I know before '67 they were back to front instead of side to side.
Does it make any difference how you vent it?

I will have to live with an open breather element for the "intake" side
of the crankcase ventilation scheme because I have no way of attaching
the intake to the air filter (I have a K&N velocity stack on top of a
Holley).

When I shut off the engine, I'll probably still get some oily fumes
coming out of the intake baffle anyway.

What's the preferred way to ventilate the crankcase on typical
hotrods? I've seen some dragsters with venturi tubes in the headers to
suck the fumes out of the crankcase -- that sounds like overkill for a
street machine though.

Tom

[ Use shorter lines! I had to reformat this message.
On my Chevelle I vented the crankcase to via two PCVs, a tee, some
hose and patience to the brake booster fitting on my Edelbrock carb.
Seems to work well as I can hear the engine re-pressurize when I pull
the PCV at idle. --FEP ]

The other day I mentioned that I used a quartz movement from Woodcraft
supply as a drop-in replacement for my analog clock in my Chevelle. I
forgot to mention that the Woodcraft Supply number is 1-800-225-1153.

As a result of my clock repair I put a new grounding strap in the dash.
This cured a few problems but introduced another. I last got gas
Sept 26 ( 20 gallons worth ) and changed the dash grounding in the middle
of the tank. Naturally ( in hind site naturally ) this changed the
gas guage reading. I ran out of gas about 100 yards from the parking
lot here, with the needle above E.

Although I do not have a number for American Science and Surplus handy,
they are located in Evansville Ill. and used to be named Jerryco. I'll
post the number when I get it again.

I need the number or address for Hildago ( someplace in Texas ) if
anybody has it. Thanks.

I am preparing to put the Global West disk/control arm kit on my
Chevelle. Other than cost, has anybody got anything bad to say
about Global West? Here in California, due to the tax structure,
it is cheaper to have GW ship to Las Vegas, and drive there to
pick stuff up, than it is to have anything shipped direct. I'll
see you in Vegas....

In general the Chevelle goes well but is an expensive hobby.

Soon, really soon, this list will be live on the Internet. We have

I've never had good luck the times I've tried cleaning them.

First, what kinda carb is this? Single feed? I don't know why, but
it seems that any crap in the fuel that gets to the carb seems to always
find its way to the secondary needle valve.

Second, what kinda fuel filter are you running? There's no substitute
for a good filter--those cute little glass Purolator filters with the
nylon element are just about worthless.

Finally, my suggestions... you've gotta somehow be getting crud to
the secondary inlet valve. I'd reccomend cleaning/replacing everything
from the fuel filter to inlet valve to make sure you have all of the
crud out of the systems. It doesn't take a very big spec of dirt to
stick an inlet valve enough to cause flooding.

I wound up with another freebie today - an Olds 350 Diesel block, with
assorted parts like oil pan, timing cover, balancer, flexplate, etc. I
even schmoozed a stay in the acid tank to clean it up.

There's nothing I really need it for now, but the price was right and
it might be useful someday. You see, the Diesel block will take a .250
overbore without a flinch. Coupled with a 425 Olds crank (they don't
grow on trees, but they can be found) you get a 455-ish short deck
motor. Sure, you can take a 403 all the way out to 501, but the Diesel
block is much stronger. How many motors can take that many cubes in a
*small* block?

[ One of my all-time sleeper desires is to find a tired old Cutlass
Supreme Diesel and make up a 500 hp SBO to put in it. I really
enjoyed the mild one I used to have, but I'd put the Caddilac/Olds
injection manifold on, and use the 350 SBC EFI computer and harness.
One might need a lot of time and a bucket of bucks, though. --FEP ]

Do you have a fuel pressure gauge hooked up? If so, what pressure are you
putting up to the carb? The float needles in a Holley are usually only
good up to about 7 psi or so, then will start to leak. This may or may
not be the problem, but you might have just slightly more pressure in the
rear bowl than the front, causing it to slowly push past the needle after
a while (probably not, but something to check if all else fails.) Either
that or I'd guess that you may need a new float (maybe you have a small
hole in it, which causes it to fill with gas as time goes on, causing the
float to drop and let fuel in.)

Are you taking the whole bowl off, or just pulling the needle/seat combo
out the top?

 Bob:
I ran into the same problem with my Holly and it turned out to be small
particles off the float bowl and metering block gaskets were getting into
the needle/seat. The gaskets were old and I had reused them a few times
when I was re-jetting. (my mistake).

I replaced the composition type gaskets with a rubberized type and the
problem went away.

Hope this helps.

Mark.........

In an attempt
to get the word to as many auto racing fans as possible, I will also
continue to cross-post to the groups "rec.autos.sport.misc", "rec.autos.
sport.nascar", "rec.autos.sport.indy", and "rec.autos.sport.f1" for an
indefinite period of time. (This again assumes the moderators of r.a.s.i
do not object to my doing so.) IMO the group "rec.motorcycles.racing"
should get a separate post as a cross-post with the autos groups would
not appear to be appropriate.

Comments, suggestions, additions, extra pit passes, etc. to:

CBC and SRC have the rights to the Canadian GP. Thanks to Pierre

-> Is a PCV valve setup any better than just open ventillation? -- does
-> it do anything good besides suck up the fumes?

Pumping down the crankcase will help the ring seal, but at PCV flow
levels I doubt you'd see much. The PCV mainly keeps the engine
compartment clean - I use PCV even on race motors.

-> If I do hook one up, I think it be like this: Have an open breather
-> (maybe one of those K&N element type breathers) on the driver's side

Either cap one side, or run PCV to both sides. There's no real need
for actual crankcase ventilation with modern oils. (back inna really
old days, straight-cut oils and condensation made dandy corrosives, so
some cars had elaborate crankcase venting/drainback schemes)

Pick a pair of valves from a Vega, Pinto, or other small four. The PCV
is a metered vacuum leak; two V8-size leaks might be more than your idle
can stand.

-> I know before '67 they were back to front instead of side to side.
-> Does it make any difference how you vent it?

No. The rear PCV on the earlier Chevys was because that's where the
road draft tube went in pre-PCV days. They simply removed the tube and
stuck a hose adapter there.

-> hotrods? I've seen some dragsters with venturi tubes in the headers
-> to suck the fumes out of the crankcase -- that sounds like overkill

Works just dandy, but requires check valves in the vent lines, and
tends not to work on cars with much in the way of mufflers or exhaust
pipes.

The standard GM gauge's sensor should be grounded when empty and something
like 70 Ohms when full. Appearantly 'dash' ground is not the same as 'fuel
tank' ground.

>Although I do not have a number for American Science and Surplus handy,

O.K. I'm impatient - there was no listing for "American Science and Surplus" in
Evansville Ill (or Indiana) nor was there one for "Jerryco".

>it is cheaper to have GW ship to Las Vegas, and drive there to

>see you in Vegas....

What more is there to say then cost - I used their subframe connector for the
mustang - including the supplimental support it was $150 (not bad). But when I
asked about the strut rods for a mid-year corvette I was told $400!!! - Herb
Adams sells a similar set-up for $140 - and this one lowers the corvette's rear
roll center. Global West says they use National rod ends - but even the big
beefy ones are only $50 or so.

BTW rear trailing arms for the corvette are about $450 from Global West with
Spherical bearings - that's really not to bad.

Every product I've seen and used from Global West was extremely beefy, and had
good fit and finish. Personally when I buy from them I know I'm getting a
product as good as anything out there - and I won't be spending good money
after bad. Its just that initial sticker shock.

Like the saying goes
"The quality is remembered long after the price is forgotten"

While at the GM dealer yesterday to have my ZZ3 checked I borrowed
the "MOTOR 1995 Source Guide". Veerrrry nice listing of all sorts of auto
stuff. On page 25 is an ad for Motors Service Slants ( bits of info ) on
disk. I have not gotten through, but the ad seems to inicate that
they are free, and available by calling Donna Butera at 800-858-3137.

Also, there is a page-long list of 1-800 hotlines for parts manufacturers.
Pehaps this should be added to the famous Vendor List. In fact, there is
a ten-page-long vendor list included in this MOTORS Guide.

MOTOR is at 1-800-4AMOTOR.

The stock diesel cranks is supposed to be a real tough unit - maybe the
toughest ever made by Olds (except maybe some DRCE stuff). Icing on the cake?
If you can convert a diesel car to gas you probably won't have to go through
emissions. In Maryland that is an automatic exemption (alternative fuel).

This clearly sounds like you're getting a particle that
keeps the float open. It might happen only on the secondary
because there is a sharp turn on the primary, and the particles
keep flowing straight into the secondary.

My recent experience with a rusted gas tank shows conclusive
evidence that 3 inline fuel filters do jack shit to stop
the particles from getting through. Arrrgg.

So I'd check out your tank very closely.

Well, on that topic..

I got my lathe running this weekend.

Total work:
   - purchased 220V 1hp instant-reversing electric motor for $240
   - fabricated mounting spacer adapters
   - drilled/tapped new holes in old main mounting plates
   - rewired new motor into old 3-pole switch

Interesting notes:

The three pole switch used by the old three-phase motor wired up fine
for the single phase motor (although the wiring pattern was
different).

The instant-reversing motor was about $100 more than the standard
motor. The instant-reversing motor was only to be found in the 220V
power. No instant reversing motors that run off of 110V. Why is
that?

A phase converter that would run three 1hp motors was $480. I decided
the cost differences wasn't great enough for me to care. I only have
one more 3phase purchase on the list, and that is the mill.

It runs great! Now for those suspension bushings...

Besides the software I'm supposed to be writing (NEED to be writing,
lest I bridge the gap between "low income" and "homeless) I have the
stuff in the shop. Somehow I keep starting more projects than I have
time to finish.

Every time I walk out there, piles of stuff stare at me accusingly.
Just to give you an idea:

| piles of steel tubing, billets of aluminum, GM cartridge hubs, and
| whatnot, for the front suspension of the race car. Status: I'm
| waiting for | my custom-made shocks, which are on a slow boat from
| England

| T700-R4, a mission-critical, "need to do this NOW" project, which
| was originally intended for my car, but is going into a buddy's
| big block Poncho. Status: critical

| said buddy is doing the hardware for the EFI system we designed
| jointly; I've already worked out the algorithms for the software,
| so the ball's still in his court. Status: no hurry

| need to finish the new crossmember and final-fit the 302 into
| Tyrannosaurus RX. Status: moderate, if I suspend the insurance
| for a while.

| various repairs, like new brakes on the truck, fix charging problem
| on wife's car, minor problems with motorcycle, etc. Status: high

| finish refinishing the milling machine, adjust gibs on table, change
| table power feed motor to single phase. Status: low

| finish flow bench, which consists of a 6-71 blower, a 1600 Ford
| engine, great plans, and little else. Status: low

| finish cleaning the Olds 455 and put it back together so I can get
| some space back, and before I forget what goes where. Status:
| moderate

| disassemble, clean, mike, and reassemble the Chevy motor for the
| sprint car. Status: high

| finish machining the counterweights on the 302 stroker crank,
| balance (I get to learn how to run the balance machine) Status: high

| repair the chassis dyno, which needs a bearing and a couple of
| switches. Status: low

| finish the modifications to the connecting rod shortening fixture,
| do some more experiments, see if I can get the local heat treat
| shop to use some of their testing equipment on before and after.
| status: low

| continue working on the body buck for the race car's fiberglass
| body. The buck takes a full bay and is in the way. Status: moderate

| finish working on tubular steel EFI manifold for 302 Ford. Round
| tubing of the appropriate diameter has been obtained; round-to-
| rectangular swaging block has been made, no further progress.
| Status: low

| take out trash. Status: ACCOMPLISHED!

It could go on and on. My to-do list, originally meant as a
gentle reminder of things to do, has become an exercise in masochism.
What have I *not* accomplished today? Gharr....

oxygen sensors?

It is correct - catalog is free - they asked where I heard about them - I
wonder if I'm the first to say "the internet"

They are all the same... I don't know the exact size, but it is a
large metric spark plug thread.

This project has been a long time coming. I bought the truck 4 years ago.
I made a deal right from the start. The truck would haul all the shit to
build a garage, then a frame up restoration. Well the garage turned into a
family room, bedroom, garage. The truck held up it's end, and more. I had
that sucker loaded till the drive shaft was rubbing on bed supports, laughing
at Toyota owners who couldn't haul 10 sheets of plywood in a4x4!
Its time. I chose a 75 Camaro subframe & rear. In rebuilding the subframe
I decided to make my own A-frames, now I'm thinking make the whole thing. That
subframe is ugly! How about some advice from some one who's been down that
road.

Same as the spark plugs I use in my 302. Ya know those cheezey "Help!"
repair parts? They sell a spark plug 'no foul' gizmo that keeps oil off your
plugs. Screws on to the plug and into the engine. I use one of those cut in
half and welded into the exhaust manifold. Comes in two packs for a few bucks.

Dug this up out of the old archives, from John D., (for the generic
sensors) :

The thread is actually that of an 18mm spark plug. An excellent
and cheap source of weld-in sockets are the "spark plug
non-fouler" adaptors that are reported to keep spark plugs from
fouling in a cylinder that is oiling. It has a male thread that
screws into the cylinder and a female thread that accepts the
plug. Simply saw the male thread off, drill the orfice out to
clear the O2 sensor nose and weld the sucker in. You can get
'em for a buck each from Pep boys and other such sources. PEP
sells the Help! brand under stock number 42009. Two to a pack.

[ I went and bought HELP! Spark Plun Non Fouler 42002 -- the
empty package is here on my desk. Last week I had the local muffler
shop weld one in each pipe, just behind the collector flange. --FEP ]

They are "M18 x 1.5". This is a fine pitch and I remember having to call
around to find a place that had some of these nuts on stock. I was
also able to find the same size pipe-thread plugs so I could remove the
sensor and plug the hole.

The Camero subframe is too wide and way ugly. You will
either have to narrow it, make our own narrowed a-arms
(or buy) or run wheels with a lot of negative offset
and not much rubber. Plus, you end up with a frams
that has been cut in half.

I put a mustang II crossmember kit in a '49 last year.
We got it from 'Fatman Fabrications'. Decent parts
and fit. They offer a 'super low' kit thay they don't
advertise - it puts the truck right on the ground. Not
sure I would recomend it for something you want to
drive often, use the regular kit instead.

I had to box the front (and rear) frame rails, notch
the frame for steering rack clearance (super low kit,
remember) and weld everything in. I made plates to
c-section and reinforce the rear of the frams for
suspension travel. Fatman has some suggestions for
rearends and springs that work well.

Good Luck

Joe

{I'm sending this to both the hotrod and Z-car lists, knowingly,
since it's a Z-car and hotrod issue :) }.

Dirk Boerer (sp?) on the hotrod list recently referenced some
knowledge of Maryland Emissions law (re: alternative fuel engines,
including diesel, not requiring emissions testing). I'm looking to pick his
brain, as well as any other MD-based hotrodders.

On a related note, a fellow Marylander and fellow "putting-an-old-small-
block-Chevy-in-a-240Z"er, mentioned that he was recently at a MD
emissions inspection station where he was told that the station was going to
be torn down within a year, since MD was going to CA-style emissions
testing.

We're both putting old (pre-1970) V8's in our 240Z's and are more than
just a bit concerned that we'll have emissions-illegal cars if the laws
change. If so, I've kept my old 6 cyl., trans and exhaust, but will also
need the air pump and 73 flat-top carbs to be legal for that one day every
year ;).

To sum up this post, Does anybody have the scoop on emissions law changes in MD?

Thanks,

I have been searching for Lexan for a wing for my Chevelle. Recently
I noted that Home Depot has the best local Lexan prices. I also noted
that they have sheet metal cones and flex ducting that is perfect for
brake cooling.

Never underestimate the number of car parts you can find at Home Depot.
Also, never underestimate the stupidity you can find there.

Just the other day a catalog for United States Plactics Corp.
( 1-800-537-9724 ) landed on my desk. The prices are not great, but
where else can you get sheet, rod, tube in many dimentions in
Acrylic, Lexan, Vivak, PVC in sheets, rods, angle, hex and square
stock. They have a good stock of polyethylene and polyethelene welding
supplies.

They have Teflon, Delrin and Nylon, ABS, hard Styrene, and Tenite
stock plus Phenolics and fiberglass panels. Even a wide selection of
glass reinforced structural Polyurethane. One of the most interesting
things was a selection of balls ( bearings ? ) of all of this stuff.

They also carry big line of bucket, pitchers, bins and bags in many
of these materials plus stainless steel.

Unless you are building a stock car, most of this might be of no use,
but I have never seen a better selection in one catalog. Just another
vendor to remember.

I have recently installed a water injection system in my car and
as winter approaches I am looking for anti-freeze additives I can add to
keep the system from freezing. Can anybody give me any suggestions?
(I don't want to use coolant as it is too expensive. Does gas line
anti-freeze mix with water?)

[ I am doing little more than guessing, but I believe that either
isopropyl or ethyl alcohol will work just fine. Look up the
freeze points for a 10% solution. --FEP ]

Also, on the subject of temperatures, when it gets to be winter
here in NJ, my car will run at the temperature of the thermostat opening
temperature. In the summer I run a 160 degree stat and I have been using
a 180 degree stat in the winter. Would there be any advantage (besides
actually having heat in the car) of running a 195 degree stat in the
winter instead?

FWIW,

A friend is selling two early Baracuda's, plus parts. They are the same
year, I think about '64-6. ('Forgive me, but my 'Cuda history is a little

I'm pretty sure alcohol is what is used as an antifreeze for water injection.
You might find that you don't need water injection when the outside air
is that cold! Use a ram-air intake setup to pull in the cold air.

A 195 degree thermostat is a good idea. The engine runs more efficiently
at higher temps, so gas mileage and performance would increase.

Well, on order forms for new Z28's and TA's, they have an option (NG1)
that is for Massachusetts emissions, along with the regular federal
(FE9) and California (YF5) emissions. So, that doesn't answer your
question specifically about Maryland, but obviously Massachusetts has
gotten the manufacturers to set them up like California.

I too have a '54 Chevy truck. I welded in a Fatman Fabrications Mustang II
type crossmember. This was about four years ago, and Fatman only had one
crossmember available. It turned out super low. I had to do a little
massaging of my frame to keep the rack and pinion boots from being crammed
against the frame. With 14" rims up front, the crossmember and oil pan are
the lowest thing up front -- they're approximately about 2 1/2" off the
ground. Not too practical, but it looks cool.

I adapted '89 Camaro disc brakes to the Mustang II spindles. There's loads
of room under the fender. I wouldn't doubt I could cram some 10" wide
reverse rims in there. There's about 4" between the inside of the fender lip
and the tires I have on 14x6" rims.

I boxed the frame from the radiator support crossmember back to the firewall.
I made my own transmission rear crossmember and motor mounts. I used an El
Camino 10-bolt rear axle which I adapted to the stock leaf springs. I
lowered the back by just removing a few leafs from each side, and have air
shocks to fine tune the ride height.

Butch's Rod Shop sells the spring perches you'll need to weld to the rear
axle housing to be able to mount to the stock 2" leafs. They also have the
shock stud plates.

If you have any questions about the installation of the Fatman crossmember,
let me know. I did it all myself, and some of it was tricky.

Basic thermodynamics dictate that efficiency can be quickly calculated by
measuring the intake and exhaust temperatures of a heat engine. The maximum
efficiency of a heat engine is e<= 1- Tcool/Thot.

In effect, the colder the intake and hotter the exhaust the more power our
engine will produce. This is the basis for actual research in ceramic and
other forms of high temperature engines.

Ok, so that said- what are the REAL practical implications to this? Will an
extreme high temperature thermostat increase performance? The answer is "not
very much!" But every little bit helps.

As a side note, what engine parts are the most heat sensitive... if you were
to experiment with a high temperature engine? Synthetic motor oil will
operate at several hundred degrees C. I suspect that alternatives to
"organic based" rubber tubing and belts exist. All o-rings and fiber gaskets
could be replaced with metal gaskets. Some of these concepts are being used
at the dragstrip...

I just picked up a 73 pontiac ventura from texas with rust on the roof.
I rot at body work, but was thinking about using my power sander and
getting the rust off, then priming it. is leaving primer only on in

at all, and want to at least do someting for the winter.

'73 has a somewhat rebuilt 350. it goes when I mash the gas :).

Folks,
Can anyone out there help? I have a 66 Mustang that was restored by a
previous owner. The car is in great shape, however it was originally a
6-cyl and its now a 8. The current 289 2b/C4 was from a 66 Stang parts
car. I am not worried about originality, as shes a weekend cruiser,
not a show car. My problem is that the car still has 4 bolt lugs. I
have a rear from a V8 66 Stang for the back, but how do I proceed with
the front end conversion? I seem to remember that this could be done
with Grenada/Monarch parts. The front suspension is completely
rebuilt, and she already has the heavier v8 front springs. What parts
do I need to swap? Can anyone refer me to a magazine article covering
the swap? The car is drum all around with no assist, and I would like
the 5 lug setup for the bigger brakes, and in the future I would like
to do a disc break changover and get some styled steel wheels. Thanks
in advance. **Joe**

be most accurate (or least inaccurate) for the following 7 days. If your
favorite event is "tba'd", please don't panic unless it's in the 7 day
window.

Please note that this listing is now being submitted to the moderated
newsgroup "rec.autos.sport.info". Assuming the moderators approve, this
list will be available in the r.a.s.i group from now on. In an attempt
to get the word to as many auto racing fans as possible, I will also
continue to cross-post to the groups "rec.autos.sport.misc", "rec.autos.
sport.nascar", "rec.autos.sport.indy", and "rec.autos.sport.f1" for an
indefinite period of time. (This again assumes the moderators of r.a.s.i
do not object to my doing so.) IMO the group "rec.motorcycles.racing"
should get a separate post as a cross-post with the autos groups would
not appear to be appropriate.

It's been a long time since I took thermo, but I think the above is close but
not quite. Max efficiency of a heat engine is infact 1-Tcool/Thot, but in the
case of an IC engine, Thot isn't the exhaust temperature, it's the temp of the
burning A/F mixture. If you could heat up the flame (different fuel?), you
could extract more energy. Heat is energy, so if the exhaust is hot, there is
energy there that wasn't extracted. A more efficient engine would have
exhaust temperature at ambient (or below?).

Imagine if you could have a power stroke longer than compression stroke. X
amount of work is done to compress the charge, you get X back on the power
stroke, plus more work because the cylinder is at a higher pressure (due to
higher temperature). The cylinder temperature goes down as pressure is
released. If the power stroke could be lengthened, you could extract more
energy, because cylinder temperature is still above ambient.

Now I'm curious. What if you changed the standard Otto cycle some? You could
close the intake valve early, allowing less air into the cylinder. Inject
correspondingly less fuel to keep a 14:1 mixture. Now you have effectively
shortened the compression stroke relative to the power stroke. Exhaust
temperature would be lower, since for every cycle you are doing more
uncompression than you did compression. Sure, you are burning less fuel, so
you are getting less power, but the overall engine is more efficient.

On a related subject, I know that increasing the compression ratio increases
the efficiency of an engine, but I don't remember why. Anyone?

Well, the power sander was unimpressive on that ventura. Do I use a
grinder to get the surface rust off? or a certain type of paper?
I am new to this body work stuff.

thanX!
Marc

[ 80 grid sanding belts will work well on bodywork you do not really
care about. In the past I have cleaned rust with a cup brush
and with a grinder. I am no expert, though. --FEP ]
