First, the coil doesn't run from 12 volts. In a Kettering ignition it
is run from current which is determined by the primary resistance of
the coil, the size of the ballast resistor, and the applied voltage
which is about 14.5 (varies with temperature, engine speed, and other
factors). In a CD ignition such as an MSD the coil sees a pulse of
about 300-450 volts depending on the particular system in use.

Second, you could calculate the saturation current but you would need
to know every last detail of the coil's construction. It is much
easier and cheaper to simply measure it. I haven't measured the time
for a traditional coil.

However, there is a data point which will suggest what a traditional
coil will do: the MSD 6 box ceases to output multiple sparks and
reverts to a single spark mode at 2900 RPM. This suggests that the
MSD designers felt that coils in general cannot be worked fast enough
to output more than one spark per 2.6 milliseconds.

Yes. Motorcycles have traditionally had ignition problems due to the
compromises used to allow operation at high RPM. Some modern auto
engines, and some race engines, use one coil per cylinder or one coil
per two cylinders. Many race engines use magnetos rather than the
usual coil.

Time to get a new machine shop?
I have never gotton an easyout to work - I have always broken the easy-out.

For intake manifolds
Cast Iron - heat until area around stud glows red - then try easy out.
Aluminum - Drill the stud out and use Heli-coil. Select a drill slightly
smaller than the bolt/stud and drill straight - this will remove most of the
bolt with-out to much damage to threads. If you really bugger the hole -
simply mig the hole closed and re-drill / retap.

Personally I have never had any luck with Easy out brand of broken stud
extractors. Most of my stuck / broken stuff has been exhaust bolts. On the
exhaust manifold I use a large vise and a drill press - line everything by eye.

I'm disasembling a set of Pontiac heads and two bolts are rounded off.

BTW thank you Pontiac for using Metric heads on your bolts with standard
threads on the block...

I'm going to coat the bolts with CRC (I can get at the back of the bolt.
I'm going to grind two flat spots on the bolts.

If I had a welder I could weld on a nut and turn the good nut.

John also mentioned a couple specialty welding rods - one was a screw
extractor - it would build up enough metal on a bolt - while not depositing on
the threads of the hole. Then weld a nut to it and turn...

>They suggested going to a place that uses a vibrating
>wire (or something akin to this) that will supposedly

>unharmed. Can anyone comment on this technology or
>suggest anywhere to reference such a beastie?

So we are talking aluminum...
drill the bastard out - a drill press should still be able to do it. If you
don't have access to one - go to a welding shop. They'll get it out with one
of the methodes I mentioned above - and if they totally blow it they can weld
up the hole and drill and retap. If this is a water neck - ask them to leave a
slight dimple where the hole was (this goes for any sealing surface) that way
you don't have to grind it flat.

One last thing - my luckiest screw extraction:
I was installing a shift kit in a TH400 - I didn't notice that some bolts where
longer than others.... so a long one bottomed out in the trans and broke.
There was nothing to grab on to. So I got a punch and an easy out and proceded
to drill the bolt out (note that the bolt is in the aluminum trans - which is
still in the car) The high school shop teacher warned me it would be tough and
expect me to bugger the entire trans. After a few taps with the punch - I
noticed the bolt turn. A couple of taps latter the bolt came out enough for
some needle nose vise grips... I guess the tranny fluid saved the day.
Never had to touch the drill or easy out.

Just think - they can cut that manifold in half - port it and weld it back
together - they should be able to get one screw out...

Good Luck
Dirk

A while back there was a request for some equations.

'Don't have them, but I got a catalog recently which included the AUTO
MATH HANDBOOK. Sounds like it would be a good place to start.

The outfit is Classis Motorbooks: 800 826-6600. This is not an
endorsement, but I thought the list might be interested...

			       TV Events

Now in its third year of weekly publication, TVE is a compilation of
info. gleaned from TV listings, auto mags., newspapers, tea leaves, my
favorite bartender, and the nice folks at TNN. A special thanks also to
Curt Swinehart for providing me with info. on the many regional sports
networks. PLEASE confirm dates and times with your local listings
before setting your VCRs.

TVE will USUALLY be updated no later than every Friday morning and will
be most accurate (or least inaccurate) for the following 7 days. If your
favorite event is "tba'd", please don't panic unless it's in the 7 day
window.

As mentioned previously, this listing is now being submitted to the new
group rec.autos.sport.info. Assuming the moderators approve, this list
will be available in the r.a.s.i group from now on. In an attempt to
get the word to as many r.a.s readers as possible, I will continue to
cross-post to r.a.s for a short time. (This again assumes the moderators
of r.a.s.i do not object to my doing so.)

Thanks to EMI Communications, TVE listings are available from
http://www.emi.com/tve.html where they will be archived for an
indeterminate period of time.

If you are having trouble with this list arriving at your site in
a timely fashion, please let me know via e-mail and I will also start
mailing you a copy.

[1] CBC also carries all F1 and most IndyCar races. The races are
usually broadcast on a tape-delayed basis at 11:37PM ET on the evening
following the race. I understand that it is not uncommon for CBC to
delay the broadcast as much as an hour beyond the 11:37PM start, so
please use extra caution if you plan to tape the race. If you have
access to it, and your French isn't too rusty, you may also want to
check out RDS. RDS broadcasts every F1 race and most IndyCar races, and
their F1 coverage usually also includes a 30 minute prerace show. RDS
and TSN generally use the ESPN feed, while CBC generally uses the BBC
feed. The exception to these rules is the Canadian Grand Prix. Only
CBC and SRC have the rights to the Canadian GP. Thanks to Pierre

I knew the baseball strike would be a real pain. (In addition to leaving
me with a stack of unused Orioles tickets).

My thanks to Len Bauer for pointing out my errors re: the Vancouver
IndyCar race. It will be aired live on "the deuce" (ESPN2) at 4:00PM
EDT Sunday, 9/4/94, and will also be shown later the SAME DAY on ESPN
at 9:00PM EDT.

Sorry about that. - Bill

First, maybe someone can identify what I currently I have... they
are 14x?6 chrome spoke wheels. Not stamped steel wheels with a wire
basket, but real spoke wheels. Haven't found any identifying marks
on the outside of them. Are these things worth anything? Doesn't
seem like they'd stay trued or balanced very well...

Next, anyone know where I can get a reasonably deal on a set of
15x7 Torq-Thrust D's with appropriate boltpattern and backspacing for
my 68 Camaro?

>From Jerry Forbes

Hi,

My name is Jerry. I'm very interested in learning more about certain
specialized gofast techniques. One of the members from the vettenet list
I'm a member of suggested that your group had an inside track to these
modifications:

	Current car: 93 LT1
			All factory options
			Borla Stainless exhaust system
			Extrude honed exhaust manifolds
			Roller rockers
			Performance chip
			Greg Carroll Vortech supercharger kit
				(computer controlled MSD)
			Variable fuel regulator
			Custom injectors
			Custom spark wires

And more custom soft (non-performance) stuff than imaginable.

I'm running about 6 to 8 lbs boost with no water injection. (Not required
at this stage). Thinking about going to 13 lbs and water injection, then
to a custom blown chip by a house in LA.

Beyond this, I think I'd like to run some NO2, but haven't seen many
people do this and still run on the street daily. Not that I use this
car as a daily driver, but I don't want it to drive like a PRO Stock,
but just be in the 11's or less.

Please don't flame me too badly. Right now I can do easy 12s and 105/08
when I'm awake and my wife's not with me. She loves to supervise anything
over 105.

I'm seeking information on running superchargers and N02 in small-block
late model chevys.

Junkyard swap would be easiest - if $$$ aren't a concern the Mopar Performance
catalog has some neat brake swap kits this year.

Later,

I was hanging around my favorite machine shop today, poking idly
through a box containing the innards of someone's small block Chevy dirt
track motor. One of the parts was a Milodon louvered windage tray,
which attracted my eye because I just installed a factory Pontiac tray
on a friend's engine last week.

The Pontiac tray covers 180 degrees of the crank; it comes right up to
the main webs on both sides. There are no vents or louvers - one edge
of the tray is formed to act as a scraper, and the other edge is a
deflector to bounce oil back into the pan. It's very nice.

The Chevy tray was a Milodon, stamped out of a flat sheet of .060 or so
steel, with five or six louvers. Nothing to brag about, particularly
when I noticed a piece of it was missing, near where the hole for the
oil drive rod would go. The hole was just a semicircle; the outer piece
was missing. As I was looking, I noticed quarter inch stress cracks
around some of the louvers. The edges of the missing part looked ragged
like a stress crack as well.

I'd never considered it before, but a tray probably takes a hell of a
pounding in there. Just the airflow from the pistons pumping up and
down is probably rough; add the cyclone from the crank's rotation,
turbulence from the rods, and whatnot, and it's no wonder the tray

The Summer, 1988 issue of _High Performance Mopar_ details this swap.
The details for A, B, and E bodies are in the 12/89 issue of _Mopar Action_.

"Tech Topics" in the 10/91 issue of _Mopar Action_ is written by the
original author of the above articles (who jumped ship from HPM) and explains
in great detail that the reader is *not* to follow the advise of a column in
the 07/91 issue of _High Performance Mopar_ (the 07/91 HPM procedure ruins
the suspension geometry).

The author says that you can send a SASE to the following address for
a reprint of the discussion:

I will be going to the Seybold Show for the week Sept. 12 to Sept 16.
Depending on connectivity from our booth, I may or may not be able to
edit and post messages from the show.

Please excuse me in advance if this service becomes too slow. There
may or may not be a guest moderator.

Next. As I mentioned before, we have a signed PO and are activly
working on a "live" internet connection. It is likely that in the
course of the next month there will be interruptions in all traffic
to and from dsea.com.

On a related note, alt.hotrod has been a really tough row to hoe,
espcially with the multiple rebuilds of the news server and firewall
here. Please be continue to remain calm, as it really really is on
my list of things to work on when I get back from the show.

I believe I know where a pair of I think are 14x7's (might be 15x7)
of these style of wheels for a Chevy. There are not
American Racing Torq-Thrust D's, but are a different brand,
can't remember which, sorry.

Should I look into this more for you?
Is only a pair good enough?
Any idea of what price you're looking at?

Perhaps you can help me! I'm looking for a pair of "skinny" 15x3 or 15x4
old-fashioned Slotted Mag aluminum wheels for the front of my '72 Mustang.
Any sources on a low-cost pair of these?

principal reruns though.

>From Dirk Broer

A quick one:
Symptom - car pings under light throttle conditions but not under full throttle
. Engine is a 383 with TPI 9.2:1 compression and large duration cam. Manifold
exhaust cross-over is blocked. Low temp thermostat.

I was thinking the pinging could be caused by the lack of EGR. Although the
engine would normally run rich I beleif the O2 sensor would compensate. So the
engine would be at part throttle, 14.7:1 mixture, maximum ignition advance and
no EGR. Without the EGR the combustion temps would be much higher. Could this
be the problem.

Thanks for any input
Dirk

[ My 355 cid 10.5:1 Olds with Edelbrock Performer package did about the
same thing. After reading Dave's and JGD's long discussion about EGR,
I came to the conclusion that I could use some, but never did get around
to doing it.

My motor did it most in the winter at altitiude ( skiing trips ) but
otherwise ran well. --FEP ]

If you're going to run N20, I wouldn't bother with increasing the boost.

> but just be in the 11's or less.
                          ^^^^^^^^ You mean, like 10's???

Well, perhaps you'll need to increase the boost too! :-)

You're going to be on the ragged edge with a stock bottom end.
The cylinder pressures are going to be very high.
Does the LT1 come with forged pistons?

Also, NHRA rules require solid rear axles on 10 second cars,
and I think an 8 point cage. You'll need at least a 4 point cage for 11's.

I don't have any direct experience, so take my advice as such.

I'd suggest a good fully adjustable N20 system that'll let you play with how
much juice you use and it's timing.
The N20 will help cool the charge from the supercharger,
as they heat up the intake quite a bit, so this should eliminate the
need for water injection.

Best of luck on keeping it in one piece!

Jerry -- here's a post from a couple months ago describing a home-built H2O
injection kit that apparently works pretty well. I have made some comments at
the end.

--- hack it here ---

Since I've had quite a bit of response about water injection I'll go
ahead and post what I've written to others about my water injection system.

I learned almost everything I know about H2O injection from the Hotrod
list, so you might want to start by downloading all the late '92 and early
'93 archives of the list and searching for keywords like H20 and water.

My system is no where near perfect yet, but I have some ideas how to get
it there which I will be trying within the next month. To start with
I'll describe the situation mine is running under. My engine is '289 V-8
with the Edelbrock Performer RPM package (intake, cam, and edelbrock
suggested head work) I decided to go a step further than their package
though. They suggest 9.5 compression and 93 octane gas. I went with
10.5 compression because I love torque. This obviously creates a problem
with running any pump gas, and it did. My engine knocks like crazy on 94
octane with 1 oz lead added per gallon which makes it 96 octane. I had
to seek a solution to fix my knock and not spend a fortune on race
blends. Cheapest solution I've found is water injection. I spent my
load on the engine build up so I had to go cheap on the injection. In
doing so I fabricated a few parts (water tank, injectors, electronic
control box, and vacuum switch).

The biggest problem in trying to retrofit my system to another car is the
vacuum switch. The switch on my system is a modification to my Edelbrock
Performer carb. The Performer carb has metering rods controlled by vacuum
signal. This worked out great for me since I needed injection when the
engine was under load and the metering rods would raise up in the carb to
switch the carb to power mode. My modification was changing the cover
plate for changing the rods, to a contact which the plunger, that drives
the rods, would touch when the carb is in power mode. This turns my
water injection on whenever the carb goes into power mode. This works
ok, but is what I will be changing in my system in order to work out its
flaws. More on my idea for a better switching system later.

The injectors were almost too easy once I thought of them. Since my
intake is dual plane I needed two injectors. My solution: Basket ball
needles. Since the water is best to not be vaporized when entering the
cylinders, these worked out great. All I did was solder the end whole
shut so water could only come out the side and spot weld them to my air
cleaner so they would shoot straight down the primary throats of my carb.
When water is flowing the primaries are always open enough for the water
to go straight through the carb and splash on the bottom of the intake.
Any techies out there know if this theory is right, or should the water
be vaporized? I haven't heard much argument either way?

The water tank was the easiest to design but took the longest to
construct. My tank holds 3 gallons of water. ('66 Mustangs have a lot of
room to play with under the hood.) This lasts about 4 tanks of gas (about
220 miles per tank). I would try and achieve at least 1 gallon capacity,
when building your own tank. The tank is made of plexiglass which is
seamed with household silicone caulk. The tank is supported in a frame
constructed of 1" angle steel welded together.

To drive the injection I used a window washer pump. The only
restrictions on chosing a pump is make sure it is an impeller pump so you
have a continuous flow of water. The flow rate is controlled by a valve in
line between the pump and the injectors.

The circuitry is an important part of my systems operation. Since my
switch was inside my carb exposed to fuel vapor I had to avoid any
sparks being generated. My switch simply closes a ground so only one
wire runs to my carb. To turn the pump on I have a 10 amp, 12 volt relay
I bought at radio shack. The coil is charged when the wire to the carb
is grounded. The coil is I believe 320 ohm resistance so very little
energy is required to flow through the coil reducing the chance of a
spark. The pump is powered whenever the relay is closed. I also have
a switch I added in the interior of my car to shut the injection off when
the motor is not running, because without vacuum to open my switch water
would flow with the engine is off and ignition turn on, like when
starting the engine. The circuitry will be growing more complex as I
revise my system.

The draw backs to my system as it stands now is only one flow rate for
the water. To fix that I am going to be constructing a multi stage vacuum
switch. How I plan to do this is similar to the way my carb knows when
to go to power mode. The vacuum of the intake is below a plunger
sitting on a spring. Right now this has only on or off operation. I'm
going to to make a longer tube for one of these plungers to ride on a
taller spring. I inherited a lathe so this is not a challenge to make.
The tube will have small holes drilled through them on the side so light
will shine from one side and be received on the other side by light
sensitive resistors (sold at radio shack, I can remember what they are
called right now). These resistors will be wired to a series of relays
which will power the pump through various resistors to run the pump at
different speeds. I'm going to try 4 stages of flow at first if that is
still not enough flow control I will increase the number of stages.
Here's a rough side view of the vacuum switch:

_____ Top will have a small hole to allow air in the top.
	| |
	| |
        | o | Stage four, Very low vacuum at this point like at
	| | wide open throttle when lots of water is needed.
        | |
        | o | Stage three
        | |
	| |
        | o | Stage two
	| |
	| |
        | o | Stage one, small flow rate when plunger first covers
	| | this hole and stops light.
	| ___ |
	||   ||
	||   ||
	||   ||
	||   ||
	||   ||
	||   ||
	||___||
	| \ |
	| \ | Spring long enough to push plunger to top of cylinder
	| \ | under low vacuum. Vacuum signal is routed to the
	|____\| bottom of the cylinder from the intake.

The location of the holes will have to be determined experimentally.

My investments in this system thus far:
  Water pump: $12 (auto zone)
  plexi-glass: $6 (WalMart)
angle steel: $4 (local steel supply)
  basket ball needles: $0.75 (WalMart)
  Relay: $1.99 (Radio Shack)
  Circuit box: $0.99 (Radio Shack)
  Silicone Caulk: $3.75 (WalMart)
Wire and widow washer hose I had laying around.
  Interior switch: $1.99 (Radio Shack)

I spent about $10 working with a throttle switch, which I scrapped for
the interior switch.

Adding my new switching system will probably cost about $20 - $30 in
material, it will require 4 relays, 4 light sensors, light bulb, and about
6" of 3/4" brass stock.

Any questions, let me know. I'd probably be willing to sell a copy of my
final system when working. I could reconstruct the system fairly easily
after doing it once.

--- hack it here ---

I have two suggestions regarding this set-up: First, and most importantly,
having a switch in the carburetor sounds dangerous. For this example
(carbureted), I'd try a mercury switch, or something else that is sealed.
Barring that, a high impedance relay would draw less current than a low
impedance one, reducing the chance of a spark. This is the opposite of what
Chip implies.
The other suggestion is to tie water delivery to engine rpm. Frequency to
voltage converters are available from digikey, etc. One of these could watch
engine rpm (frequency) and output a voltage signal that would drive the pump
through a power FET. This would have the advantage of delivering varying
amounts of water at different rpms.

Anyway, since your application is injected, you would almost have to go the
second route (f->v). let us know how it works...

	| |
	| |
        | |
        | |
	| |
	| |
	| |
	| ___ |
	||   ||
	||   ||
	||   ||
	||   ||
	||   ||
	||   ||
	||___||
	| \ |
	| \ | Spring long enough to push plunger to top of cylinder
	| \ | under low vacuum. Vacuum signal is routed to the
	|____\| bottom of the cylinder from the intake.

The location of the holes will have to be determined experimentally.

My investments in this system thus far:
  Water pump: $12 (auto zone)
  plexi-glass: $6 (WalMart)
angle steel: $4 (local steel supply)
  basket ball needles: $0.75 (WalMart)
  Relay: $1.99 (Radio Shack)
  Circuit box: $0.99 (Radio Shack)
  Silicone Caulk: $3.75 (WalMart)
Wire and widow washer hose I had laying around.
  Interior switch: $1.99 (Radio Shack)

I spent about $10 working with a throttle switch, which I scrapped for
the interior switch.

Adding my new switching system will probably cost about $20 - $30 in
material, it will require 4 relays, 4 light sensors, light bulb, and about
6" of 3/4" brass stock.

Any questions, let me know. I'd probably be willing to sell a copy of my
final system when working. I could reconstruct the system fairly easily
after doing it once.

I'm new around here so don't know if this has been covered or not. I've got
several questions on transmissions:

1. Can anyone tell me the torque rating(s) for the Doug Nash 4+3 transmissions
used in the mid 80's Vettes?

2. Has anyone heard of problems with the Borg Warner T-56 6 speeds as used
in the new Z-28s?

3. Does anyone know exactly what must be changed/modified/constructed to
put a T-56 into a Vette that has a 4+3? I've seen a couple articles on
installing them in other vehicles but these were a lot different setups
to start with and used the aftermarket version of the T-56 rather than
the Z-28 version.

Thanks

Howdy folks.

I am new to the list but so far I like what I see.

I am the proud owner of a '69 Sklyark Convert. The car is an
original 350 2bbl TH350 car...3.23 gears I think. In the near
future I am planning a rebuild of the motor and transmission.
I want to use 9.5:1 compression and a 650 holley carb. Does
anybody have any suggestions as to cam, lifters etc??
I am shooting for the 350+hp mark. How about buick heads??
Where there different heads for the 2bbl car than for the 4bbl?
I can't find any difference in the shop manuals.
Anyway, I basically want a stout street motor that will give the
car a little bit of get up and go so that I won't be embarassed the
next time I take it to the stip for a little weekend action.
(In it's present form I ran 18.00!!!!) ACK!!

PS Has anybody had any good/bad experiences with portmatching??

Back in the 1950s "boxed" connecting rods were pretty common on high
output flatheads and early OHVs. They faded away in the mid '60s,
apparently due to the efforts of Mickey Thompson, who sold forged
aluminum rods at a price few people could refuse.

Boxing consisted of welding thin (.062?) sheet steel over the open
sides of the rod's I-section. Usually a small hole was drilled at the
bottom for venting. Apparently the gain in strength gained from the
extra metal was more than sufficient to overcome any problems between
welding and heat treat, if any.

My old hot rod books give the names of places that used to do this
stuff, places like C-T Automotive and Hank the Crank, who apparantly
aren't around any more. My 'satiable curiosity wonders what kind of
welding process was used, what rod or wire, were the rods heat treated
after welding, what were their failure modes? Are any of the places who
used to do this sort of work still around?

I can't see boxing being worthwhile nowadays, when you can buy custom
billet rods for well under a grand. At modern shop prices the hand work
required to box rods would rack up that much money pretty quick. But
it's an interesting old trick, and one I would hate to see slide
completely off into oblivion.

Where must be half a zillion old boxed rods rusting in people's
garages. Anyone have one or two they'd part with as a curio?

Now in its third year of weekly publication, TVE is a compilation of
info. gleaned from TV listings, auto mags., newspapers, tea leaves, my
favorite bartender, and the nice folks at TNN. A special thanks also to
Curt Swinehart for providing me with info. on the many regional sports

before setting your VCRs.

TVE will USUALLY be updated no later than every Friday morning and will
be most accurate (or least inaccurate) for the following 7 days. If your

window.

Please note that this listing is now being submitted to the moderated
newsgroup "rec.autos.sport.info". Assuming the moderators approve, this
list will be available in the r.a.s.i group from now on. In an attempt
to get the word to as many auto racing fans as possible, I will also
continue to cross-post to the groups "rec.autos.sport" and
"rec.autos.sport.nascar" for an indefinite period of time. (This again
assumes the moderators of r.a.s.i do not object to my doing so.) IMO
the group "rec.motorcycles.racing" should get a separate post as a

Thanks to EMI Communications, TVE listings are available from

Mailhot and Tak Ariga for info. on coverage in Canada.

AMSOIL is a good synthetic sold through a dealership network
of private individuals. AMSOIL's sales tactics have been
likened to other companies with similar distribution networks --

If you would like a good synthetic oil, try AMSOIL.

My father-in-law was an AMSOIL distributor, but eventually got
disgusted with the way they sold things. He still uses the

In article , hotrod@dixie.com (The Hotrod List) writes:

Most racing oils are SAE 50 or 20w-50 which is just to heavy for
most street engines. OEMs and engines builders alike are using much
closer tolerences today than they did 20 years ago. You actually make a
tight engine work harder by using hearvier oil. Which can increase your
oil temp. A high quality 5w-30 Synthetic is the best choice for street
and rod applications.
As for Mobil1...it is pretty good, better than just about all
petroleum oils on the market. Castrol Syntec is about 22 years behind the
learning curve and is not as good as some petroleum. Be careful with
Syntec change it often! If they spent as much on R&D as they advertising
they would have something.
The best synthetic in the world is AMSOIL. Check it out.

You guys aren't serious are you - I got 40k out of my 88 LX and was
perfectly happy. (Of course it came with a 5/60 warranty, so it was $100
repair)

ALWAYS blow up your tranny before the warranty if possible. But
otherwise, I don't think it's unreasonable for a stick to blow at
100kmiles!

Wojasinski@butler.edu
Bob Wojasinski

Thanks

I think you can get some very specific answers to your questions in a
group called vettenet. You can subscribe to them at:
vettes@asuvm.inre.asu.edu.

There are some very knowledgable people there who have had actual esperience
with what you are talking about as well as other vette technical info.

They have been discussing the T-56 and the 4+3 in just the last week or so.
Give them a try. Just put "subscribe" in the body of your message and
they will get to you mucho pronto.

Your right Bob, 18s just aren't much fun.

On your cam/lifter question, just pick out the ad for one or two of the
reputable (name brand) cam folks and call the number listed in the ad.
These people are set up to answer questions exactly like you have and
they really know what they are talking about. They will give you as good
an answer as you can get.

There are also a couple of places who specialize in Buick stuff who have ads
in some of the mags who can give you all you need to know on heads and what
is hot. If you are looking to get into the 13/14 second area you are
definitely going to need good breathing which I doubt your 2 bbl heads can
provide.

As far as port matching goes, it doesn't give much power gain unless you
have a badly misaligned setup. If you want to tinker with them however,
align the intake ports only. The exhaust ports will actually benefit a
bit from a small lip or edge between the head and the header inlet. (It
gets into what is called "anti-reversionary flow" stuff)

Use your intake gasket as a pattern and scribe your heads and intake
manifold and then grind to match.

Good luck.

Does anyone happen to know of a place that specializes in "dropping" I-beam
axles? I have a '31 Plymouth that I'd like to drop about 4-5".

I know a lot of people just swap in a Ford axle set up for cross-steering
which they adapt to new parallel-leaf springs, but it means getting the
entire suspension (Vega steering, cross-links, tie rod, spindles, etc.)

I saw a '31 Plymouth at the Goodguys show in Pleasanton, and it had the stock
I-beam which had been dropped. It also had disc brakes adapted to it. It
used all the original tie rod, drag link, and steering box. The owner didn't
know much about it because he bought it all fixed up.

Does anyone know who makes the adapter plate to adapt disc brakes to Plymouth
spindles? And, does anyone know a shop that still knows how to "drop" an
I-beam? I think the old I-beams are forged or something, so they take
special welding skills to keep them strong.

If I can get this thing dropped without too much trouble, I'll probably stick
a 350 Chevy in it -- but possibly I might go nuts and stick a 460 Ford in it.
Would I need to do more than box the frame to be able to handle the torque of
a 460? I don't think the 460 would even fit under the hood without
lengthening it and having open sides for the valve covers to poke out.

I know about Butch's Rod Shop, they sell adapted Ford style supsensions to
fit the Plymouth, but does anyone know of anyone that knows how to adapt the
stock Plymouth suspension to discs?

Thanks for any info or comments.

Tom

This is what will become a periodic posting of the charter of the hotrod
mailing list. With all the new participants we are picking up from
the alt.hotrod group, many have probably not seen this. It is automatically
posted twice a month, on the 1st and on the 15th.

I wrote the charter in consultation with several people who helped get the
list going. It has changed several times over the about 2 years the list
has been going. If you think there needs to be another change, then
by all means bring it up for discussion. My experience has been that
most people don't seem to care a whole lot about the charter so
I try to seek a consensus among those who do.

John
--------------------------------------------------------------------

The mailing list hotrod@dixie.com is chartered to provide a
forum for people interested in high performance vehicles to
exchange ideas and discuss topics of current interest. This
list is chartered as broadly as possible consistent with noise
supression. I believe it to be more constructive to list
unacceptable topics and behavior rather than trying to
ennumerate permissible behavior.

Unacceptable topics:

*	Discussions about stock street cars.
*	Discussions about magic elixirs such as Slick 50 with no technical basis.
*	Ford vs Chevy vs ... bashing.
*	Foreign or domestic car bashing.
*	Purely Cosmetic issues concerning stock street cars. (Buyer's guide
to fuzzy dice/air fresheners, for example.)
*	Usenet-style flaming of any sort.

Explicitly acceptable is any discussion regarding increasing the performance
of any vehicle. "For Sale" and other commercial messages, tastefully
done, are permitted. Please, no hype.

To subscribe to this list, send email to hotrod-request@dsea.com.

Include on the Subject: line the keyword "subscribe" and a return path to
your site. Example: If you are at foo@bar.edu,

Subject: subscribe foo@bar.edu

If you do not include a return path, my Incredibly Dumb Mail Slave will
try to extract a path from your mail header. If it does not work, this
slightly less dumb mail manager (me) will not intervene. Include a path.

To be dropped from the list, mail to hotrod-request@dsea.com with the
following subject line:

Subject: drop foo@bar.edu

The address given MUST be EXACTLY the same as the address you used to
subscribe with.

To post to the list, send mail to hotrod@dsea.com. Please
include a meaningful subject line. Inquiries, and other administrivia should
be addressed to frank@dsea.com.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

A lot of people ask if they are missing articles or if they have been
unsubscribed from the list. There are easy answers to these questions.
Each article is assigned a sequential serial number that is contained
in the mail header X-sequence: If you see missing numbers, you know
you have missed articles. See below for the archive site.

The only two reasons anyone is ever unsubscribed from the list is a) if
that person asks and b) if mail to an address bounces. Because of the
way mail agents handle undeliverable mail, I get gobs of bounced
messages. That combined with the volume of the list means I must
remove an address on the first round of bouncing. If you are on
an Internet-based machine that uses SMTP, being down for even a
short time will result in bouncing. UUCP sites seem to have about a
day of cushion. The volume of messages on the list is seldom less
than 10 messages a day even on the weekend so if you don't get
messages for a day, you know you're off the list. Simply send a new
subscription request to rejoin.
