The Ford Small Block Head FYI, version 98.02.12
created and maintained by: [email protected]
Corrections and submissions are welcome. Please send them via email

This is a compendium of the information I have available on Ford small
block cylinder heads.
Remember: though the air flow figures are very nice to have, they are
not directly comparable between different tests! We're lucky
to get the pressure drop used, much less the air density etc.
Use these numbers only as a rough guide.
Warning! If you decide to buy bare heads, some heads don't take standard,
easily available valves! In fact replacement valves may be hard
to get, period. Also, some heads take Chevy springs, not Ford.
Others have relocated ports or require special rockers, etc.

(2) | Requires very nice but specific to application and
| quite costly shaft rocker setup. Max flow numbers
| of ported head is actually a little lower than its
| predescessor, the C302. However, with the appropriate
| dished piston the efficency of the small combustion
| chamber on the C3 head is excellent.
(2) | The flow of a ported Yates head does not significantly
| increase between .500 and .600" of lift. At .600",
| intake lift at 28" is in the 311 to 326 CFM range.
| Exhaust flow at .600" is 230-249 CFM.

comments | relocated valves, raised exhaust ports
(1) | the valve springs they sell are intended for a
| maximum of .520 lift and for that reason they only
| have flow data to .500.
(2) | O-ring grooves optional
(2) | will fit '88-up 5.0s with cams under 290 advertised
| without notching the pistons.
(2) | stock pushrods and rockers are used
(4) | The heads feature .56" thick fire deck and combustion
| chamber walls for strength without compromising
| cooling capacity. Additional support risers are
| strategically located in the water jacket for
| additional rigidity and head gasket integrity.
(4) | the heads are available with an optional O-ring
| groove for use with Fel-Pro's Loc-Wire(tm) head gaskets
(5) | With all of the work on the Trick Flow heads we've
| run into only one real problem. The combustion chamber
| diameter.
| It's big. Big enough that the 4.080" ID fire ring
| on most gaskets will overlap into the chamber. Trick
| Flow initially didn't appear to know about the problem.
| Charlie suggested that we must not be checking with
| dowel pins in place. When we replied that were,
| Charlie whipped out a head and gasket and said "uh,
| yeah".
| Trick Flow says this won't compromise sealing or lead
| to premature failure. I'm not entirely convinced,
| given the amount of work a failed gasket entails (in
| my app, anyway) and the general difficulty in keeping
| gaskets in a 302 with aluminum heads.
| For a bunch more money you can run the Fel-Pro O-ring
| gaskets. The gaskets are quite expensive, as is the
| requisite grooving. The fire ring ID is also big,
| 4.145" as I recall.
(6) | Phone call to TFS wrt reported spring problems:
| - The problem was with the earlier heads.
| - The springs that have the possible problems have
| a pink stripe on them.
| - Some springs have broke during break-in, some
| lasted 5k miles, some are still going.
| - Customer rep was friendly and is shipping out a
| new set, no questions asked.
(7) | I did some piston to valve clearance checking with
| the twisted wedge heads and a 302 block last night.
| The cam is .600" lift with 242 duration @ .050".
| It is worth mentioning that the valve seats in the TW
| head are located deeper in the chamber and further
| away from the pistons. This results in a lot more
| potential clearance than other Windsor designs.
| Since I'm interested in milling quite a bit off of the
| heads, I did my clearance checking with no head gasket.
| The valves were set to zero lash (which also reduces
| clearance). The pistons were TRW forged flattops with
| a fair bit of flycutting.
| There was a lot of exhaust clearance. It did not
| appear to be an issue. I left the number at home but
| I recall it was about .200".
| There wasn't any intake clearance. With a normal cam
| it might have been just fine. The intake valve is
| relocated towards the lifter valley a fair bit. The
| critical side of the intake valve intersected the
| piston *inboard* of the valve relief (and the relief
| had already been enlarged). It just touched the
| piston. It turned over without any binding, but it's
| basically hitting. I'll be punching the valve
| centerline tonight to verify the situation. Looks
| like more flycutting.
| The intake valve reliefs won't have to be deep, just
| relocated.
| Chamber volumes after porting were 62.2 cc. Taking
| into account the sealing grease I'd say 62.0 cc.
| Unported, I'd say 61 cc, though we didn't check.
(8) | Talked with D.S.S. Competition Engines. They have
| been working with the TFS TW heads, and have found
| the reason that all magazine articles and ads about
| the heads quote the use of an E303 cam is that it is
| the only cam that will work with those heads without
| valve-piston interference. The standard fly-cuts will
| allow the piston to hit the valves when using B303,
| X303, etc. cams, in their experience. They are going
| to program their CNC machine next week to move the
| flycuts on the TRW forged pistons they offer so that
| the TW heads can be used with cams up to .600 lift.
(10)| early article said the exhaust ports were raised,
| now Summit says they're stock height

(2) | The TFS heads have a raised intake port. A friend

== Misc Stock Head Data =============================================
(data from [email protected] unless noted)
==351W Heads on 302 -------------------------------------------------
When using 351W or most aftermarket heads on 302s you need to install
hardened washers under the head bolts, or the bolts will deform the
holes in the heads. Hardened washers can be ordered from speed shops,
but can also be obtained from machine tool supply or aircraft supply
shops. Don't try plain old hardware store washers as they'll mash
out of shape under load. Many aftermarket heads also have the 351W
style 1/2" head bolts as they're supposed to be "universal" fit. You
should always use hardened washers on with aluminum heads no matter
what the bolt hole size.
If you swap "real" '69-'76 351W heads onto a 302 you need to use the
351W style intake manifold gaskets, as the 302 gaskets will leak water
at the unique 351W intake manifold water ports.
==Measured 351W Chamber Volumes--------------------------------------
Ford 351W '69 4v head 56-59cc C9OZ-6049-F
'70 head 63-64cc or 59-62cc - sources don't match D0OZ-6049-C - mine
cc'd out at 65cc
C9OE and DO0E 351W heads appear to be identical
==Cleveland Rockers ------------------------------------------------
Big block Chevrolet rocker arms can be used on Cleveland type heads.
Their nominal ratio is 1.71, vs. 1.73 for the Cleveland. Nowadays you
can get the proper Cleveland rocker for about the same price as the
Chevy part.
==Windsor Rockers ------------------------------------------------
Hot Rod's Engines 1993 mentioned builder Joe Sherman runs small block
Chevy rockers on Windsor heads. The ones I measured didn't line up by
over a quarter inch.
==Oddball 2V Cleveland Exhaust Ports--------------------------------
351C-2v heads are popular for some racing classes. The 2V, 351M, and
400 heads are all pretty much the same, *but* some 351M heads have a
bizarre "potbelly" exhaust port, with a the top of the port lowered
to about the valve guide level. You can barely get a finger through
the port, it's that tiny. And for some reason it's part of the water
jacket, so you'll hit water if you try to grind it out.
==High Port Clevelands ---------------------------------------------
Back inna old days the Cleveland people used to "high port" the heads
by lopping off the outside between the valve cover and bottom of the
exhaust port, then adding an aluminum plate to move the ports up and
straighten them out. The 4v Cleveland ports had a very sharp kink in
them, bending more than 90 degrees, to get manifold clearance in the
typical tight Ford engine compartment.
High-porting went out of fashion as soon as the first SVO heads came
out, which do basically the same thing right in the head casting. I've
never heard of anyone attempting this with a Windsor, and I'm not sure
why anyone would bother. 20 years ago if you saw a high-ported
Cleveland you knew it was a seriously bad motor; now maybe it's just
flash to part suckers from their money.
BTW, the 2v Cleveland has an *entirely different* exhaust port than the
4v, actually larger, straighter, has a beautiful shortside radius, and
flows more air. I've never understood why Ford didn't use the 2v
exhaust port on both heads, but there's a lot I don't understand about
Ford.
emory!werple.apana.org.au!speednut (Mark Jose)
- Australian 302 Clevelands were 351Cs with 3.0 inch cranks. They had a
closed chamber 2V head. Regular Australian 4V and 2V 351Cs used open
chamber 2V style heads with 2.05/1.65 valves. "Imported" 4V engines
used in the last of the Phase Falcons used 2.19/1.71 valves.
HR June 83
- "C8ZE-B HP" castings are service replacement 289 HiPo parts; some or
all are marked "302"
Ford Performance, Pat Ganahl
- Ford changed pushrod and valve stem lengths on both the 289 and 302
around 10-21-68. The later 302s have .060 longer stems and pushrods.
Ford offered several different spring keepers and lash caps to correct
mismatches in service replacements.
- Ford began using the same basic head casting for both the 302 and
351W in 1977. The main difference is the head bolt hole diameter -
7/16 for 302s, 1/2 on 351s. These later 351s, originally identified
as 351Ks, have the rectangular 302 intake water passages and 6 intake
manifold bolt holes. Original 351W heads have L-shaped water passages
and 8 intake manifold bolt holes.
- says small block Chevy valves and studs will work in Windsors, though
the Chevy valve tip is somewhat shorter and may require a different
length pushrod to properly set rocker geometry.
[email protected] (Walt Boeninger)
fordnatics 20 Sep 1995
- Also, the late model 302 heads have a larger water passage at the rear,
which means the intake gaskets are different between early and late
models. We found this out the hard way last weekend, when my friend
didn't pay attention to the fact that the intake gasket water passage
extended past the end of the cylinder head. Makes for a major water leak.
- [The ones I've seen have had the huge holes at both ends, which would
make them leak twice as much, right? -dlw]

The following heads sometimes show up at swap meets or in Hemmings
Motor News. They are probably pretty good, but you need special
manifolds and headers to bolt them on, and most don't have provision
for head-mounted accessories. They're pretty much curiosities unless
you're looking for sheer visual impact, like on a street rod.
